1990 XJS Convertible price query
I've been set on an XJS for a while, and found a 1990 V12, one owner with 50,000 on the clock at my local dealer. However, they have listed it at $20,000. It has a new soft top (they say cost $3000), and looks in good shape, but from my research, this is really high, isn't it? Opinions welcome.

Waay too much
I have a '91 XJS V12 Convertible in excellent shape, I paid $10,500 for it about 5 years ago, and that was high, but it had new top, new seats and a recent paint job.
I was offered (unsolicited) $14,000 for it not too long ago, so prices may be climbing a little, however you can without a doubt still pick one up for under $10K
The Blue Book price on that car is about $4500

Thank you everybody, that all conforms to my guess on pricing, but I wondered whether I was missing something. Out of interest, expatjagman, what's the mileage on yours? I mean clock rather than mpg. I have another option at 80,000 / $10k ish with a good service history, so if that's in the ballpark I might take it up.

Mine had 90+K when I bought it - has around 117K now... The car at the $10K price sounds more where it should be particularly, if it has a reasonable history. I looked around and found cars in various shape, from under 5K to around 20K - I knew what I was willing to spend, and talked the seller of this car down, she was a widow, it had been her husbands pride and joy, and she was originally asking $14K - six months later I bought it for $10,500.
I probably should mention that I've spent at least $5K on mine since I've had it between, replacement body panels, new radiator and water pump, new electrics, replacement tires, upgraded stereo... etc. and now it really needs a new roof, and window seals, and I suspect the heater core is leaking.... But it's still a head turner, and lots of fun to drive.

'90 XJS Convertible
I have a 1990 XJS V12 Convertible that I want to sell but am not sure what it is worth. This car was part of our estate but I am not a car collector. It is in great shape and all original. It is blue with dark blue top has 42K miles new tires and I just had it tuned up. Thanks for the help,

Also, do a Craigslist search, not just locally, but across all cities and states to see what people are asking as well.
It should help you find the right ballpark. I course it also depends on how long you're willing to wait for the right offer...

Heh heh, how true!
There's a big difference between actively putting a car on the market and selling it versus waiting around for months (or years) for the guy who stumbles along and throws a too-good-to-refuse offer at you. IMHO the former is good for establishing market value for a particular model; the latter is not.
Whenever I've offered a car for sale I've expected it to be gone in 30 days or less. If it doesn't sell in 30 days there's probably something wrong with the advertising, the car, or the price.
If either the buyer or seller is influenced by unusual circumstances the the car might sell above or below typical market price. A seller who is desperate for cash because his child is sick may accept the first offer he gets, even if it is very low. A buyer who, for whatever personal reasons, has been waiting years for just that exact model and color to come along may pay a crazy-high price.
IMHO these type of situations do not singularly create a revised market value for all buyers and sellers of the same make and model.
Cheers
