I'm finally starting to put things back together on the XJS (scary since it is mostly in pieces at this point).
I'm currently installing a new water pump and have a quick question: Do you put anything on the threads of the bolts when securing the pump?
One buddy suggested locktite blue (I think that is asking for problems).
Another suggested anti-seize (makes sense to me). Thoughts?
Also, the new pump doesn't have the counter-sync ponzi bolt. I know it is 5/16 with number 18 (I think) thread. Any lessons on replacing or do people try to drill a counter sync...
Antiseize, not loctite. The pump bolts should have thin serrated conical washers (called a Belleville washer) that serve the same purpose as a lock washer. Lock washer and loctite is belt and suspenders. Steel in aluminum gets pretty well stuck on it’s own, no need for loctite! You’re going to want to help the next guy get those bolts out, so anti-seize it is.
Boy that old pump is a greasy mess. It looks like every XJS I’ve ever touched!. Since you are in there, I assume you’re going to replace the rubber plug (covers up the timing chain tensioner release point) and the front main seal? Well worth doing since it has been shedding oil all over the front of your engine.
Speaking of greasy mess, power steering pumps love to leak too, and I see you got a greasy one of those too. Edelmann 7910 from Rock Auto includes the pump bushing, which most Jaguar supplier don’t include in their seal kits. Toughest part of the rebuild is getting the pump body out of the tin can without wrecking it. To make it easy, I’ve got a 5” hole cut in a chunk of plywood… then I use a long punch and a hammer into the mountain holes to pop the pump out. If you end up ruining the can, you can buy one from classindustries.com. The pipe coming out the back might be in a different position, but they work fine. Much cheaper to buy a 5” hole saw and not wreck the tin can in the first place.
Thanks for all of the feedback everyone! I can see the merit of antiseize and also the locktite based on Greg's experience.
Was planning on the plug replacement. Hadn't thought of of the front main seal...I'm already well into "while I"m in there" as this only progressed because I had the front sub-assembly off and ended up doing the oil cooler, radiator, rings on the intake and return oil lines....the "while you are in there" never ends eh?
I'll also have a look at the power steering pump.....sigh...
If ever you are in Ontario, Canada, I owe you a pint. That trick with the 5" hole in plywood punches made separating the power steering unit a breeze. I have no doubt that it would have been an impossible task otherwise.
