Default 1992 XJS V12 - Diagnostic scan tool?

My Jag has a fuel issue, it chokes when I push the gas pedal, but it keeps the idle normally. The catalytic converter gets so hot that it turns red. My mechanic says that fuel is not getting burned, but will not work on the car without a reading of the codes or errors. This car cannot connect to a OBD2 scanner (they started in 1994 I believe), do you know of another tool that would work with this 1992 car?

PDU will, but it’s hard to find one. Your best bet is a Jaguar dealership. Where are you located.

Since you mentioned cat turning red….you have a very common v12 problem. The mechanic is correct that unburned fuel is being sent to the cat.

You need to replace your distributor asap. Do not drive the car.

I don’t own a v12, but others will warn you, probably using all caps. Do a search on the forum. Download The Book, by Palm. There is TONS of info on this problem.

Search for Marelli Meltdown

As VEE stated, the ONLY reader capable of reading XJS V12 OBD codes is a PDU/basestation combo with the appropriate cables and CDs. Few places have them since the CDROMs in the basestations died. There are now ways to replace them, but many were junked in the interim. That being said, it sounds like you may have the classic Marelli ignition failure. Kirby Palm's BOOK can be downloaded here:http://www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/XJS_help.pdf Marelli issues are discussed at length starting on page 161. DON'T drive the car until it is fixed. If you state where you live and say you are looking for someone with a PDU in your area in a separate post, someone might be able to help.

I think that you need to take it to another mechanic. It's likely that it's not getting spark at all the cylinders and that can be checked with an inline spark tool

Any stored codes should be flashing on the center display. And find a diagnostician who can troubleshoot with a scope. Here's a good start for what to look for:
