My XJS's are V12's so there experience here won't help, but one of my X300's had this problem. It had the AJ16 engine which in my case was irrelevant but may have something to do with your problem. In my case the car had 160,000 miles on it and the transmission fluid was old and slightly burnt smelling. I changed my fluid and filter which was plugged up and resolved my problem. While I was researching the problem it appeared that others who had this problem said it was a throttle body issue. If you would like to do a little more research yourself, look in the X300 forums as they have the similar engine/ transmission issues.

mine used to do that every now and then as well. if i would tap on the trans relay under the hood a few times and turn the key on and off it would go away.
