Default 1995 xjs diff lubricant

Recently had left rear wheel bearings replaced. Ex Jag tech ( has his own business now) decided to replace rear diff oil while he had car. He put in synthetic Redline and an anti slip additive. Got car back and when making turns at slow speed you could hear a rubbing scraping howling noise in either direction. I took jag back to him and he blew me off stating that the additive had to mix in. After 40 miles, the noise got louder and louder to where I decided to drain the diff myself. Upon my surprise the new diff oil looked like grey matter. Also to my surprise, only about a quart of oil drained out. I put in 2 quarts (oil started to run out of the fill hole) of Castrol 80/90W axel limited slip conventional oil and within 2 miles the rear got very quiet and after about 10 miles the howling scraping rubbing noises has completely disappeared. I will be draining the diff oil again within the next few miles to hopefully flush out all the grey matter (probably clutch material).
Bottom line, the car will never again be taken to this establishment and the diff will never again see Redline oils while I am the Stewart of this car.
just wanted to convey my story.

Givoo,

Glad you resolved it and good idea to flush again. Check teh colour and even consider a third change after a few more miles. Also check you've got a magnetic plug. The replacement plug I got this week didn't have a magnet like the original, so I've fitted one in it.

I haven't used Redline lubricants but they do seem to be a very well-known brand. They also have limited slip diff oils so I'm wondering what diff oil he put in and also why needed to add an LSD additive when he could have just filled with their lsd diff oil.

I know you may not want to talk to him again, but it would be interesting to know what he actually put in (is it on your invoice?). With the fact that you seemed to drain only 1 US quart out, perhaps the fault lay with what the mechanic did rather than Redline oils themselves?

I also changed my diff oil this week and decided to try a move to Castrol 75w-140 LSD oil at the recommendation of a few owners. Haven't driven it yet to verify any difference.

Cheers

Paul

Paul,
just got done draining diff fluid again after 60 miles. It looked a lot better but still slightly grey. Nothing compared to what I drained yesterday. I put in approx 2 quarts. I will replace fluid again after another 100 miles or so. Using my lift, it only takes about 30 minutes.

The mechanic put on Invoice 2 quarts Redline and 4 oz redline additive.
and Yes, I plan on paying him a visit this week.
I want to give him back the used Redline oil and additive he put in.

J.

Good job!

I let mine drain over 3 days. I refilled it really slowly, and when it just started to drip out, I had put in approx 1.75 litres.

Cheers

Paul
