Out on a limb suggestions:
Being 1996, it would be the ZF 4HP24 electronic controlled transmission. I am not sure of the involvement of the elecktrickery, but understand it is for gear change mainly, but I may be wrong.
The members in the XJ40 and X300 Tech Sections have this trans in their cars, and there are more of them, than 6cyl XJS. NOT wanting to mess you around, but you need answers.
The fact it does nothing at all, and its full of good clean fluid, then the electric components may be the answer. Maybe/? a fuse, oh if only it could be that simple.
I have zero experience with the 6cyl XJS, they simply did not venture this far South. Hence my suggestions for the XJ40 and X300 Tech Sections.
Good luck.

Can you feel if the shift lever is actually moving the cable to the trans? Is the there a trans light on the dash cluster? Did it stop suddenly while driving or after the last drive and you parked it and are now when you start and drive first time in the morning.
