Default 1996 XJS 2+2 conv. 4.0L transmission

Gentlemen,

I am a little confused regarding the trans in my 96 XJS 2+2 Conv.

I have ~ 90K miles on it and I want to change the transmission filter and fluid. When I look on ebay for items they refer to a 17bolt pattern on the transmission pan cover.

Today I changed the oil and while under there I looked to confirm the 17 bolt pattern but what I found was a six bolt pattern. Is this the standard transmission and if so what specifically should I be looking for in a filter/gasket. Some of the items I saw also listed a couple of shift point switches to be replaced when you have the pan off.

As always I appreciate your help. Remember I am 70yrs. and any suggestions you have to make it easier for me is appreciated.

Thanks

You have the 6 cylinder engine. The gasket has been the same since about 1988. The filter is different from the 3.2 engine to the 4.0 litre engine as the 4 litre engine had a deeper sump.

Goto the Jaguar Heritage parts website. Find the correct part numbers for your car then put them into e bay.

Melhook,

Do you know what the # of pan bolts for this unit? Some of the parts refer to a 17bolt trans pan and mine is 6 bolts.

Thanks

Since the XJS was built for 21 model years often you will find parts listed that describe the older model with the GM trans over your ZF transmission. I have a 1995 with same engine trans and here is what I found out when I ordered a trans filter on line.

I ordered a trans filter and gasket based on my year and model and the filter came too thick-would not fit inside the trans pan on the XJS. What I found out is some companies include the XJS and XJ6 together for '95 and '96 but the XJ6 pan is deeper. So I would suggest ordering one from like NAPA or whatever good parts supply store you have locally. You will pay more but if it comes in too deep they will deal with it and you will not be stuck with it.

If you have the 6 cylinder engine you will have the ZF box and 6 bolts. Much easier to change the Oil/filter and gasket than on the V12

Softball60,

You need the filter screen part number JLM664. There is an error in the Jaguar parts system which says JLM2128 for your car. This is WRONG. That's the XJ6 part. We have liaised with Jaguar and they are due to change the system. You need JLM664.

The gasket is JLM12343.

Hope that helps.

Paul
