Default 1996 xjs fuel pump removal

I’m starting to remove my fuel pump. I have read that it takes a special tool JD175 to remove the fuel pump hoses inside the tank.

Do I need this tool or is there another way?

Thanks Softball60/Paull

Hi Softball

There is another way!

All you need is a piece of Copper 1/2 inch Water Pipe about 2ft Long and a Hacksaw

Very easy to make one in about 15 minutes and I even had time to put handles on mine, which are not really needed but that's just me

You just need a Slot cut out of the Pipe about 6 ins from the bottom so that this last 6 ins will slide over the Fuel Pipe

Then all you do is push the Fuel Pipe Fitting towards the Boot/Trunk and then pull off the Clips

Do NOT! Repeat: NOT! NOT! NOT! lose those Clips or that could very easily ruin your Life 'Big Time!'

Here you will find a Full Write Up on Removing and Cleaning The Fuel Tank (if you need to) and Replacing the Fuel Pump, as well as making one of those Special Tools for Removing those Fuel Pipes for virtually nothing

It is only those Fuel Pipes which hold the Tank in the Car, apart from the Fact that they jammed it in tight with lots of pieces of rubber, so tight you will be thinking that it is Welded in!

Loads and Loads of Photo's describing the whole process, in the Link Below

Removing the Fuel Tank and Fuel Pump on a Facelift XJS including how to make the Tool to Remove The Fuel Hoses

Good luck!

I've done this job a Couple of Times and it is really up there on my List of 'Jobs From Hell'

OB,

Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I wasn’t clear enough as I meant in side the tank not the fuel lines located at the front of the tank that you need that special tool which can be made from either plastic or metal.

Anyway, Since I posted my original question I have figured it out as there is only one (1) hose to be disconnected inside the tank and it was easy to get to.

BY the way your attachment was excellent!!!!!!

As far as I know all the hose connections in the tank are standard clamps.

You are correct, but at the time when I asked the question I had not yet violated the inner sanctum of the tank.

Removing the hoses and pump was pretty easy!

Thanks
