Default 3.6 xjs choice of two

Hi I am contemplating the purchase of either a 1988 hardtop or a 1986 convertible, the latter having targa panels and rear soft folding roof. Both have been treated to a full body resto, rust cut out panels replaced and both refinished in original jaguar colours.the convertible is a manual and the coupe is auto. Both are approx the same price. Really torn between the two, any tips or views would be really appreciated. I have not considered the v12 option as I feel the engine and set up etc is a bit daunting. The convertible still requires all external and internal trim to be refitted so if this is to be my final choice be prepared for a few requests for refitting tips.
Thanks for looking.
Den.

Den,

The 86 is a "Cabriolet" not a "Convertible" - really quite different XJS models. If it were me and the cars were in exactly the same body and mechanical condition, I'd go for the Cabriolet, rarer, more interesting and a manual. The manual cars really drive quite differently and are more engaging IMO.

You do need to be aware that the Cabriolet-specific trim parts, targa panels, catches, trim. rear locker boxes are really hard to source with NO new parts available. So make sure that everything is intact or at least understand that you'll be trying to source second-hand (if you can find any!) and price the purchase accordingly

Good luck with whatever you decide

Paul

Thank you Paul, yes I am drawn to the challenge of getting the more rare car back on the road, it's less than 6k so no big gamble, my xk8 conv. is auto so maybe the manual element will win the day.
Cheers
Den

I like manuals and Cabriolets so I know which way I'd go if the choice were mine. Does it also have a rear anti-roll bar? That would be a bonus.

Hi Gregg afraid I have succumbed to both of them, haha. Yes I agree with your views, as for anti roll bar, not sure if I have interpreted properly it does have a frame underneath which I understand is to keep the chassis stable under cornering, but if you mean a conventional chrome type bar over the rear of the cab then it doesn't it only has the centre barpanel which holds the drop in targa panels. If there is an additional anti roll bar I would be very interested in hearing from you.
Thanks
Den.

ive got a 3.6 manual cabby, although ive never driven an auto xjs, from what ive been told they are more of a sedate cruiser whilst mine is an all involving agricultural feel, which is just how i like it.
it just depends on which you like to drive for pleasure. i drive slushboxes all day long and want more excitement for recreational driving.

Yes Leo likewise not driven a 3.6 auto or manual, last xjs I had was a 5.3 auto but with such a big powerhouse it was effortless, but a nightmare in greasy conditions I am looking forward to comparing the two 3.6 options and will feedback my thoughts.

Hi Den, yes I was thinking of the sway bar in the rear suspension...many V12 autos didn't have it while the manuals, at least those that came to Canada, all have it. Along with the lighter engine, it reduces understeer quie nicely.

Congratulations on your new adventure(s)!

Great news Gregg I currently have it removed for blasting and powder coating, happy to measure it up and share details if this is of interest to you or other folks.
