The 86 is a "Cabriolet" not a "Convertible" - really quite different XJS models. If it were me and the cars were in exactly the same body and mechanical condition, I'd go for the Cabriolet, rarer, more interesting and a manual. The manual cars really drive quite differently and are more engaging IMO.
You do need to be aware that the Cabriolet-specific trim parts, targa panels, catches, trim. rear locker boxes are really hard to source with NO new parts available. So make sure that everything is intact or at least understand that you'll be trying to source second-hand (if you can find any!) and price the purchase accordingly

Thank you Paul, yes I am drawn to the challenge of getting the more rare car back on the road, it's less than 6k so no big gamble, my xk8 conv. is auto so maybe the manual element will win the day.

Hi Gregg afraid I have succumbed to both of them, haha. Yes I agree with your views, as for anti roll bar, not sure if I have interpreted properly it does have a frame underneath which I understand is to keep the chassis stable under cornering, but if you mean a conventional chrome type bar over the rear of the cab then it doesn't it only has the centre barpanel which holds the drop in targa panels. If there is an additional anti roll bar I would be very interested in hearing from you.

ive got a 3.6 manual cabby, although ive never driven an auto xjs, from what ive been told they are more of a sedate cruiser whilst mine is an all involving agricultural feel, which is just how i like it.
it just depends on which you like to drive for pleasure. i drive slushboxes all day long and want more excitement for recreational driving.

Hi Den, yes I was thinking of the sway bar in the rear suspension...many V12 autos didn't have it while the manuals, at least those that came to Canada, all have it. Along with the lighter engine, it reduces understeer quie nicely.
