Default 5-speed manual conversion for V12, opinions please.

I have it on my todo list and so far have found only these guys, who offer complete swap solution.
Can someone please suggest different sources, or approach?

i found one of the vendors who sells the V12 bellhouse - manual trans adapter plate. with that, virtually all your problems are solved. theyre asking $550. =

http://www.5speeds.com/v12bell.html

for the sake of this forum, and all who are watching, please dont buy one of those outrageously expensive kits. do this project on a budget, do a write-up, and youll be a hero.

Hey Mish

Depends on how much torque you plan on putting through the box but these guys have a kit to fit the Toyota Supra box if you are only going mild, and it is not too over priced.

Welcome to Dellow Conversions

Being a non ABS car makes it a little simper You can add a Wilwood clutch to the existing pedal box.

cheers
Warren

Price list they emailed to me it's a year old but should not have changed dramatically.

I did not go down this road because of the ABS and horrendous cost of ABS manual pedal box. And the Supra box to take 600hp is as expensive as a TKO600.

TOYOTA SUPRA 5-SPEED OVERDRIVE INTO JAGUAR
12 CYLINDER ENGINE

1. Bell housing & pivot ball $550

2. Pilot bush $25

3. Clutch fork & clip $95

4. Thrust race and carrier $95

5. Clutch plate 10" $145

6. Clutch plate 10 ½” $185

7. Push rod $25

8. Rear cross member support $95

9. Speedo cable $95

10. Tailshaft yoke $145

11. Universal joint $75

12. Weld yoke $75

13. New steel billit flywheel $450

Toyota Supra 5-speed (fully reconditioned) $950

We supply an 20” shifter position standard with our boxes but we also produce a shifter at 14”, which suits very early Jags (pre 1979 approx.) $275

Quik -shifter 18” or 20 ½” $275

These guys are in Australia, which makes this kit not affordable, while Supra box seems like an excellent option.
I suppose $5K for full, worry free kit with Tremec is not too bad?

screw the kit. get the bellhouse adapter, whatever clutch and flywheel you need to make it work, a double overdrive or a 5 speed out of a camaro or firebird, a slave cylinder and a pedal out of said firebird or camaro, make whatever driveshaft mods necessary. done

War? what makes the ABS so much more expensive?

I'm thinking about the same conversion. I was impressed by the detailed instructions on thedrivenman.com site.

If you have a 2.88 rear end, you might also consider switching to the 3.54.

im thinking, with the 2.88 rear diff and a double O.D. trans, youd be idling at a grand at 70mph

Is that a good thing? I believe these engines are not your big block chevy's and have rather limited torque at idle?

Do you know what a headache it is to replace rear diff on these, I just went through that and do not wish to ever touch it again, 2.88 for me it is!

Other options - depending on your plan for use - is to install an overdrive unit on the stock transmission. That in effect, turns the 3 speed into a 6 speed. Or the 4-speed auto conversion from John's cars.

I have just done a gear ratio swap that has taken 4 months and it is still not back in the car yet, so I know first hand what a PITA this is - however if I had to do it again with the experience I have gained it would be a lot easier.

Options

A spacer can be used on the 2.88 hemisphere to set the new crownwheel at the right pinion offset.

Heavy duty Dana 44 19 spline hemisphere and gears will fit into the salisbury diff. The pinion spline is different so a replacement yoke will be needed - but a lot of parts are direct Jeep replacements. This option gives a greater availability of ratios.

Just another thought the TKO500 with its ratios is well suited to the 2.88 rear and would ok unless you want to serious HP through it.

i dont think anyone on this forum is gonna make enough horsepower to break a tko500, or a supra gearbox, or any other aftermarket box on the market.

maybe if you had a 3 speed conversion from an old chrysler. lol

I just received a message from Robert Hall at Thedrivenman.com. It seems Tremec is raising its price by $300 but you can leave a deposit and get the old price until Thursday. If you change your mind, deposit is refunable for two years.
