Default 83 V12 starter removal

Hello,
Following the exhaust replacement, I've decided to restore the starter that is not very young.
It was easy to remove the lower bolt but the top one is quite inaccessible. The front of my car is on rail !
To find the best solution, I took a small picture and .... no bolt !!?

Now my question is how to pull out the starter because it is not moving at all !? I need also to find the reference for this special bolt.
Any idea?
Thx

I am not sure where that pic is taken from, so apologies if this post is something you already know. But to remove the starter the top bolt is threaded into the starter from the rear. You have to get a long extension/s and push it up to the bellhousing from the rear. The bolt is a 12 point bolt so needs a 12 point (double hex) 7/16th socket, preferably on the wobble bar-type extension end.
here is a useful post, also

Sorry my mistake, the picture is ugly. I took another one half an hour ago from below.

1 - Is the lower bolt that I have removed.
2 - Is the first picture
3 - Some of them are missing and I have the felling that the black support this is full of oil. (Another subject)

If there really is no bolt in the top fixing, in theory at least, a wooden block against the starter given a clout with a hammer should free it. battery disconnected, of course!

Hello Greg,
Nothing in the top, only the hole and the starter cable fixing ring. Strange.
I'll try with the wood tomorrow.
Thx

May I also suggest, if the starter is bad get yourself a new reduction gear unit. They are about half the weight and much smaller making installation a lot easier.

Thanks for the idea but I have a very good place that are doing amazing restoration.
What will the price for a smaller unit? Do you have references?

Cheers

And my local indi has a helpful tip. When reinstalling the motor, attach the long cable to the motor beforehand, and feed it up to the firewall connection. That's easier than trying to do the motor connections after installation.

Just to be sure, before whacking the motor. Do you know that the top bolt should hold the fairlead for the starter cable, and that the fairlead fixing, the end that is held by the top bolt ( as shown in your first pic) SHOULD be under the top bolt? And that the top bolt is (or should be) in a hole directly to the LEFT of where the fairlead fixing hole is in your first pic? The fixing hole is NOT, repeat NOT the empty hole shown above the fairlead fixing hole in the first pic.
The bolt hole (and the bolt if it is still in there) cannot be seen in the first pic; it is obscured by the exhaust. If you push your finger directly to the horizontal left of the fairlead hole in pic 1, you will just feel the bolthead if it is still in there, in an indentation in the gearbox casting.

Hello Greg,
On the first pic, the exhaust is already removed but I took the picture with my phone. I'll check if this is possible to get a better picture.
To answer to your first question, I've no idea if the fairlead for the starter cable is only fixed with the missing bolt but this is a big one and I don't think that this is necessary.
I'll check on the left of this hole if I can find another bolt but this is really inaccessible due to the two small pipes in the lower picture.
Question, what is the distance between the two bolt on a remove starter? It'll give me a better idea where to search.
Thank you.
Laurent

I cannot tell you the distance, but here are two pics of the bolt in place. It is the small 12 point one.
The wretched system will not load the photos, the system just hangs. Whoever did this software update needs firing. If you pm me now with an email address I will send you the photo. It will clarify exactly what you are looking at and for.

Try again. The bolt we are talking about is the small 12 point one holding the cable fairlead.bracket

Hello Greg,
Thank you again, I can see now where is the bolt but how can you make a picture, I really can't pass my fingers.
I'll check of the bolt is there but it seems not.
Thanks.

Get one of those inspection mirrors on a telescopic stick to see for sure if the bolt is there, if you cannot get your fingers in to check.

you will need a 7/16 12 point 3/8 drive socket, extension and universal. Its a PITA to remove but perseverance and patience will pay off
