Default 83 XJS Brake light problem help

I need help with this badly. When I turn the switch when the ignition off the back tail lights are on like usual, then I turn them off start the car and the brake lights stay on,if I hit the brake pedal nothing they just stay on. Any ideas? I need to get this car going and I've checked all the usual stuff. I'm at my threshold with this. Oh and the bulb warning light is glowing on the dashboard.

Mike,

I was a bit confused by how you described the problem. If you just turn on the ignition to Pos II, (don't start the car, don't touch the light switch, don't touch the brake pedal) do the brake lights come on?

If so, start by looking at the brake pedal switch, It sounds as if it may be stuck.

As regards the bulb failure light. If you don't turn on the light switch, does it come on, and also stay on? I believe the module is designed to "test" the lights when they are first turned on. (It is on early XJS and late XJS). So, it illuminates when the light switch is first turned on and then extinguishes after xx seconds if all the circuits are ok.

Cheers

Paul
