The XJS stereo slot is the standard single DIN size, which means you can choose anything you like to personal taste. As the dash lighting is green at light ideally you would want something that lights up green. I find the stereo a little bit low down and far away in the car so I have a remote control which means I don't need to be reaching down as often.

Alpine was the OEM stereo of choice, so you may want to start there.

Personally I WAS a big JVC fan, but their displays now look awful.

If I were to buy a head unit now, I would look at Alpine and Kenwood predominantly. Any display that uses the following format to show letters and numbers would be banned from my car:

_ _

I suppose it is.

ECBJAG, I still have my OEM radio, are you still interested in purchasing one? Works fine.

too bad. I've got an '87... but you can get somewhere around 100 bucks on ebay for one from a '96... This one is a new one so its obviously going to be a little higher..

For what it's worth(pun), I'll be replacing my stock cassete unit with a Pioneer unit with MP3 and USB port and remote hopefully next weekend from my '89 XJS. -I do have the original manual and code booklet and both cards.

You may be the only person who can help me... I purchased this car with the missing faceplate. Do you know what faceplate has this connector?

I would pull out the head unit and get the model number. I couldn't tell you what kind of unit without additional info.
