When I bought my 92 the owner had fitted an aftermarket stereo but provided the original unit in a box and I have the security code. It is a Jag part DAC6571 or the Alpine code is AJ9150R
I want to refit the original, as the previous owner had cut the existing harness I sourced another factory radio harness so it was just a case of plugging the old radio in.
The unit powers up, I can enter the security code, then everything operates as it should, I can tune the radio or control the boot mounted cd player but there is no sound at all, not even static coming out of the speakers.
I guess the amplifier in the unit has gone?
Does anyone have any experience of getting these unit repaired?
I talked to Pauls Jag in Florida about sourcing an original radio and his comment was they were junk when new and still are. Said he had a pile of about 75 of them and all had various faults. Sent some to a number of electronics repairers and none were able to bring them to full operation.
However, one thing that does affect electronics of that age is microcracks in the solder joints. If you're handy with a soldering iron, try reheating the solder around the output plug where it joins the printed circuit board. Also look closely at all the solder joints for any signs of cracking. I have revived a number of older electronics just by applying a bit of heat on solder joints.
I found a local company that repairs radios and specialises in Jag units. He said that over time the capacitors start leaking and damage the circuit board so it is likely to be that. He said they would do a full check and replace the power amp as well. Cost will be £110-150 depending on how much they need to replace. It seems is a lot compared to a new head unit but I think having the original one will just look and feel better
