At 44k and with being laid up for so long, you're well overdue for an auto fluid and filter change. It can make a huge difference to those ZF boxes.
Do the change, reset the light, drive the car and see how it goes.
Good luck

I'm ok with the fluid/filter change, but how do you reset light... i still have not found-out where to hook-up my scan tool ? I do have a factory service manual ... I'm in a learning curve with a Jaguar.. ' Old Corvette Guy!' Thanks!!!
butkusandbale,
Unfortunately, your scan tool won't work with your XJS. You need a Jaguar-specific PDU which plugs into a bespoke port in the boot.
However, you should be able to dump the fault code and light by disconnecting the battery for 30 mins. If the light goes out then reappears, it's because the car has "seen" the fault again.
Hope that helps
