Default 95 XJS aj16 Fires right up when cold but...

I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas, it was quite mellow up here in the Pacific Northwest, lots of opportunities to get the cat out on the road.

I have a 1995 XJS conv AJ16 engine, 69K miles, it runs very smooth but it takes excessive cranking to get it started after it has been driven, then sits for 30 minutes or longer.

It fires right up after sitting for a couple of days or more when everything is cold.

After it is warmed up, shut it off for a few minutes, it will fire right up

If it sits for 30 minutes or longer it takes about 6 seconds of cranking to fire it up.

If it sits overnight it takes a little longer fire up than if it sits for couple of days.

Jaguar issued a TSB for poor hot start - tank pressure control valve. I replaced the valve but no change.

Any help will be appreciated, thanks and happy new year.

Merry Christmas

With the starting situation on the AJ16 I would start with the crank sensor (should get a new one anyway), then check all the fuel relays in the trunk ( I think we have one for the pump, and one for the injectors) if that still does not work I would move on to looking at ECU pins and the fuel pump itself.

Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I will start with the crank position sensor. There are so many different brands out there, is there a particular brand of choice or would any oem from one of the parts wharehouses be fine. Happy New year.

I'd either buy a Jaguar OEM part, which you can find on ebay from a few jaguar retailers, or you can go down to your local parts store and get the brand they sell there. Should come with a warranty.

I'm not aware of people having trouble with certain brands of CPS'.

Yes, neither have I. Any of the ones sold as OEM should do. I bought 3 Lucas labeled ones a while back and the one I installed has been fine for 2 years.

I re-read the original post and it may very be the crank sensor, since it's acting up after the car gets hot, thus weakening an already weak sensor from the heat.

I have a similar issue on my X300, which was due to a fuel pressure regulator. Might be worth checking.

Installed the new crank sensor last night, preliminary indications point towards still having the problem. Scraped arms, grease everywhere, a few choice words, now that was fun. I really do like working on my kitty.
