Accessing rear speakers 1992 XJS Coupe
My rear speakers seem to have died, but if I set the fader to full back and turn up the volume, I get some static.
I removed the seats and was able to squeeze my hand behind the panel to the wiring harness by the right rear speaker. Jiggling it around brought the left back speaker to life, but nothing for the right one yet.
How do I get this panel off?

If the fixings are like the HE (pre facelift, and I think they are, but am not sure) this is the procedure:
remove rear seat, squab first (two tiny nuts below under the front of the squab); then back (two screws at bottom then jerk upwards to release the top from its peg and clip fixing)
Pull off the furflex from the door jamb.
Ease off the clips holding the leather to the door pillar
Ease back the leather from the jamb and this reveals two or three screws - undo them
remove the door pillar trim by undoing the coat hook, and the seatbely fairlead, pulling cant rail outwards a bit if necessary, and lifting out
undo the screws holding the speaker panel/armrest that are visible now the rear seat is out
Lift the speaker panel out and up to release the top from the window rubber.
Take 2 minutes to re-attach speaker wires, test and reassemble!
Even if not identical, you should see how it is fixed along these lines, anyway.

It was a bit different. I ended up doing the following:
- remove the seats. Two screws under the squab, and one at the bottom edge of the backrest
- remove the door sill
- remove the furflex
- gently pry two plastic plugs from the pillar which held the leather in place (one at the very bottom and one about a foot higher)
- remove the small decorative wood panel (by gently prying the back edge forward) to reveal two screws
- remove the two screws
So with that done, I was able to confirm (using alternate speakers and audio source) that the speaker is fine and the sound being delivered was not. I now suspect the stereo itself.
