Smile Black reservoir

What kind of fluid goes in the black reservoir located on passenger side of US XJ-S? Any help would be appreciated.

1989 V12 HE.
i have answered my question. Brake fluid. My issue is that I have a leak, I am suspecting coming from the pump. Had the system out and replaced the reservoir "O" ring. Still leaks.

I am going to pull the system out again a look for a seal in and around the pump. Has anyone had an issue with the brake assist system?

Am also pulling the rear suspension to replace discs and calipers on my XJ-6L.
My only other mode of transportation is my Grand Cherokee that now needs to have the water pump replaced. I think I will do that first, so I have something to drive. OH WELL.

Thanks again, for your quick response.

Sounds like you've got a lot on your plate. I can relate.

Just FYI, the black ball isn't really a reservoir, it's the ABS pressure accumulator. Just a word of caution, they operate at very high pressures, so don't forget to depressurize the system before tinkering. To do this you just press the brake pedal about 20 times with the ignition "off" (and make sure to leave it off until the system is resealed).

Mac

I pulled the system out and I believe the leak is on the low pressure side. Maybe the O ring on the elbow that feeds the system. It doesn't appear to be high pressure. Thanks for your suggestion.

Walls:

Sympathy !!! My Grand Cherokee needs a fuel pump replacement. A lot of clutter up front for WP access. But, at least it is up top. FP access is also cluttered. skid plate, trailer hitch, hoses and wires, but worse, "down and under"!!!

My Jaguar is my transportation !!!

I'm not reading this the same as everyone else that suggest you're talking about the brake accumulator. The passenger side of an american XJS would be the right side of the car. Would'nt the brake accumulator would be on the drivers side which would be the left side of the car. Sounds to me like he's asking about the power steering pump. My 88 doesn't have ABS so maybe I'm wrong, jaguar did some wierd things but putting the ABS pump on the right side?

The buick reatta I owned that had the TEVES system same as early XJS systems the accumulator was on drivers side.

No, on US cars the accumulator and pump is located on the passenger side. I suspect because there was plenty of room there, whereas things are tight around the brake master cylinder and reservoir.

Cheers

Default Black Accumulator

Good morning guys,

Well You are both correct. It is the ABS accumulator and the leak was coming from the "O" ring on the 90 degree into the pump. It became hard and leaked.
It drained the reservoir. All fixed. Thank you for your help in my understanding the system.
This Forum is an incredible source of information.

Thank you again.

JagCAd,

I think I can replace the pump without pulling the fan shroud. The XJ-S is my transport now as well. It could be worse, they are not a bad ride.
My XJ-6 is under repair. Rear brake calipers etc. It is chev powered and fun to drive. Normally my go to transportation when all else fails.

Have a great day.
