Default Brake light coming on , 95 XJS

Hello everyone,

The brake light is coming on in 95 AJ16 XJS. Not the ABS light, just the brake light. About 5 days ago, I started having a problem with the car vibrating when coming to a stop, so I automatically assumed "rotors /discs" and ordered them, but now my light is coming on as well which has me extremely worried that its the 3k dollar actuator.

The car had the Teves 3 used on all 88 thru early 95. The fluid is full, so I know I have not lost any, nothing strange other than the disc vibration. Last time the system was bled was 3 yrs ago, about 12k miles

If anyone knows of a way to test that actuator please let me know.

My worst fear with this car has always been brakes just going out while driving as its happened to others

Kinda late to your party, Spike, but I'll see if I can help. Provided your car's VIN number ends at a number LOWER than 198335, the brake system you have is the Teves MKII system. You should have a large fluid reservoir, power cylinder and master cylinder on the driver side, and a pump/pressure switch/accumulator on the opposite side.

Since you seem to still have brake assist right now, the first thing you should address is the brake vibration. That is most likely a problem with the foundation brakes. Make them right first, then you can attack the MKII system.

Since your system appears to function, yet shows the Brake Lamp, I think the next thing to do would be to test the pump and accumulator. I described how to do that in this post:

If all seems to operate as described, there is a good possibility the item called a Combined Pressure Switch may have failed. The circuit [from the pressure switch] to the warning on the dash can sometimes fail and signal the warning erroneously. If that's the case, it shows the warning when all is actually OK. Finding that out for sure will require some pin-out circuit testing with a wiring diagram.

First things first though, get the vibration addressed.

Good luck!
