Default Brake Pad Question (Front XJS 4.0L)

Hi Guys

GF Just picked up the Front Brake Pads for my XJS Celebration Convertible that I am putting back on the road after fitting New Calipers
but these Brake Pads look different to what I had before

They look the same as I had before except for 'One Thing'

These Brake Pads look as if they have Metal Backing Plates on the back of the Piston Side

So Wondering if I should take these covers off or leave them on?

Are they just for packaging or do they actually serve some sort of purpose?

What are these Metal Backing Plates for? Should I Take them Off or Leave them On? Does anyone know?

They are anti-squeal glued on bits. In my car the pads will not fit easily with them on (all EBC pads come with similar backings) so I always prise them off. Which I recommend. But as long as the pads go into the caliper OK, it does not really matter.
