I guess this means you won't need the rear end I'm picking up?

the crank has been cut and the rods have been narrowed.with narrowed bearings, just waiting for the money to pick them up and pay for it. doing some more port work on the heads this week and then a valve job, then once I have the rods I will purchase the pistons.

despite what everyone keeps telling me, I refuse to go twin turbo or supercharged on this one, way to much work, way to hard to run reliably

and above all, I know it can be done, so that makes it way less appealing.

UPDATE: the motor is in the shop, and they guy has been letting me watch as he assembles it.

The crank is installed, and 1 rod and piston is installed. my miscalculation on an oil ring caused the ring to be bent and now i need to source a new one, Other than that, the motor is coming along good! will post pics when i have the chance too.

I am considering doing a Pre HE V12 build. Are those 1980 V12s readily available? Where are the best places to find one?

OKay! I'll bite!

I have read and re-read this thread, but can you summarize the situation, as you have it now:

1. bore and stroke
2. con rods, length, journal size, bearings, wristpin details
3. pistons: what is the CR? What'd they cost, and from whom did you buy them? Are you willing/able to post a drawing?
4. liners: where from? Beere? Would you have gone to the other vendor you looked at, or put the other way, why did you go to beere?
5. What's the story on the valves: OEM sizes or some other? Are you doing new seats, if some other size valving is being used?
6. I would guess you are using the block from the flathead engine you evidently acquired? If so, are you going to fit a lip seal on the crank (machining mod)?

Cool stuff, Calvin!

I'll add to this

What's the cam spec are you planning on using?

alright:
bore is 96mm
stroke is 74.5mm
total displacement is 6.47
rods are gm sbc 6.0 rods narrowed .100 and use chevy 229 bearings
stock valves, the oversized valves seemed a little too big for a street motor, and they wouldn't make a whole lot of difference unless you were using massively larger throttle runners, like in an ITB setup, or with webbers.
pistons are from Ross pistons, and they wrre custom made from the drawings rob beere gave me,
compression is 10.7 to 1
I went with Rob beere liners simply because I knew they would fit, and I wasn't going to chance it with one off liners.
the cams are 278* .440 lift advertised. the isky XM5.
I thought about the lip seal, but after talking to my engine builder I decided against it because it was a lot of work and in almost all applications a high quality rope seal won't leak, especially one like in the jag where is has the worm and blade infront of it to keep oil from flowing all the way back.

Calvin:

Great details! I have seen Ross do 10:1 pistons for E-type V12s, so I guess this is why you went this route. Did they also supply the ring packs?

I would like to attach pix sent to me from another Jag Lovers lister, showing the Group A and Group C head details, and especially, the Group C piston. Anyone know how to do this (other than to insert a URL for the pix)?

I'd really like to know if this piston looks like yours? It appears to have valve reliefs cut into what looks to be the design you are using. I have no idea what the CR is, or the valve sizes (I suppose these could be estimated from the relief cutouts, though).

Do you know, does Beere do your piston design in other bore sizes?

For others on this thread, regarding cam timings: in the TWR book, Scott indicates that cam timing as 100 degrees between lobes...I don't think I've ever seen cam timings referred to in this manner. Anyone know what this means in relation to the usual cam specs? Later in this book, where he talks about a custom 6.4L motor, he indicates that the cam timing is 110 degrees between lobes...

Mike,

You can insert pix by clicking the paper clip in the tool bar above your message (). I think it's only available in the advanced reply format. That opens a small window where you browse your PC for the photo, then click the upload button in that window. If you have several photos to upload, you have to do this several times, as it wont upload multiple pix at the same time. Each photo you upload will show up in a list in the middle of that new window. If all you want to do is attach the photos to the message, you're done at that point. However, if you want to insert the photos at various points in your message, you click the paper clip again (), and you will see a list of your uploaded photos. Simply click the one you wish to insert in that spot.

OK, here goes with the pix.

In order, these are:

1. Group A valves
2. Group C exhaust
3. Group C inlet
4. Group C piston
5. Group C piston
6. Group A inlet
7. Group A inlets

!

I also put in a CAD drawing (without dims) for the piston design. What I am interested in, of course, are the dimensions, and the wrist pin details. Calvin, if you can share those, that'd be great.

Scott: thanks for helping a guy out on the 'how to'!
