Default Cleaning front suspension parts and redoing brake calipers and rotors

Spent a good long time cleaning the front suspension parts of gunk and grime, and it sure needed it. After cleaning, could see that the upper and lower ball joints need to be replaced as there is no rubber on the lower and upper is cracked. no regrets in taking this step

Boy, are(where) they ever a mess

Good plan. Just a note to mention if you were not aware, when you remove the top ball joint, you will find shims each side of the balljoint between it and the top wishbone arms. Note carefully and keep separate those from each side of the balljoint, as these control the front castor angle, and need to go back where they came from. Be careful to ensure the spring is held compressed when changing the BJs too.

Good time to renew the top wishbone bushes too, easy to do, just undo the nut each side of the arm on the inner pivot, slide off the old and slide on the new. Also, what is the stub axle like, any scoring? Just a thought...

Also presume you will be doing new caliper pistons and seals. These.often rust up and drag and wear pads.

Agree, Greg raises a good point. The seat for the rear bearing race on the axle stub. LnrB and hubby found that NIX's were worn.

Odd, to my way of thinking. The roller bearings roll on a race and in turn, the race turns on the axle??? Metal to metal. No bearing?

But, it is what it is and replacement stubs fixed the issue. After some massaging!!!

Son and I had a discussion on ball bearings vs roller bearings. He has two antique mills and isd refurbishing them. Ones spindle is on rollers and the other on ball bearings!! High spindle speed and bearing cooling is the issue there.

.

carl the latest advance in ball bearings is CERAMIC *****,lighter and much less friction than steel, also the pressure angle of the forces involved, engineering thanks to bearings for SKATEBOARDS.
darn world keeps advancing!
