Default Clutch Slave Cylinder line plug '94 XJS

My Clutch Slave cylinder is going and I got the rebuild kit. Just wondering if anyone has removed this and what means to stop the fluid from coming out of the line once I detach? I have seen youtube videos for other cars where guys put some kind of cap on the end of the line to plug it up? If anyone knows what the size cap would do the job?

Thanks

Scott

Hi Scott,

I presume this is a 6 cylinder car(?).

I replaced both the slave and master cylinders on my 1990, 3.6. I suggest that you stretch some clingfilm over the opening of the fluid reservoir sealed with a small elastic band below the threads. The vacuum that is created below the clingfilm as the fluid leaks out of the open pipe at the slave cylinder end should hopefully ensure that little fluid is lost. From memory I think I was also able to plug the end of the pipe with one of those rubber covers that you get on bleed nipples.

You will need to bleed the system afterwards. Mine was a pain to do. Conventional clutch pedal / nipple opening and closing would not shift all of the air. Neither would a trigger operated vacuum tool that is supposed to suck the fluid out from the slave cylinder end. The only thing that worked was a tool that pressurised the fluid in the master cylinder fluid reservoir using air pressure from one of your tyres. This drives fluid through the system and out the slave but beware of leaks.

Good luck.

Cheers,
LeeP

Hi Scott,

Yes that is the sort of thing.

My kit, bought in the UK, was a little cheaper but more basic. It worked directly off the tyre which meant you had to lower the tyre pressure to 20psi or so in order not to blow any hydraulic seals and then had to stop on a regular basis and re-inflate the tyre as you bled the system and the tyre pressure decreased. The one you have seen seems to have a regulator which allows you to step down the pressure in the tyre to what you actually need. Should be quicker and easier to control.

Cheers,
LeeP
