Default Coach Builders Ltd. - XJS Convertible

For what I can see, my XJ-S has been customized by: Coach Builders Ltd. But more than that, I have not been able to dig out.
Does anyone know something about this company? Do they still exist? Does anyone know of other Jags modified by this company?

Here in the States, convertibles prior to '87 were done by smaller firms for individual dealers. Larger scale production was not until '87 - '88 when Hess & Eisenhardt produced an 'approved' model for the US market (and even that was on a limited basis with somewhere between 800-2000 units total), followed by the factory convertible in '89 worldwide.

So yours is certainly in very limited company.

Cheers,

- Will

Mine is an 83 and I've never found any markings that identified who converted it, but it looks just like that style. No 1/4 window and rather bulky when down. I'll have to research the company myself!

In my search on the net (wikipedia), i found some more custom builders that has done mods. on XJ-S.

Coach Builders (1983–1988)
Creative Coach (1980–1982)
California Convertible Co. (kit, 1989)
Custom Coach Limited (1984–1988)

I have something similar to this, 84 XJ-SC Little side windows that drop down with the top. The top on mine is really bad (torn off) and needs to be replaced/redone. The whole car is a bit odd, has Lister ground effects, and some Dayton bolt on wire wheels (not the knockoffs). Needs a ton of work.

Here is some pictures of the the cat. I forgot to take pictures with the soft top up, but I'll try to remember the next time I'm out there. Still have to sort out the transmission issue (have only first and reverse) before I can drive it home. Waiting for a new vacuum modulator.

I have not found any tags on the car that can confirm who has customized it. I can only guess, based on photos of cars i have seen that looks very similar to mine.

This is also a project. I intend to fix all small things that does not work before I strip it down to the bone. Then I know that it all is supposed to work when i assembles the car again in 2 years time.

Looks close to mine, if they're the same, be careful with the top frame, it's ... funky!

I contacted coach builders, it's actually a different company now but the guy I spoke with worked at the original company. They can still provide some parts, however he said the best place to get a new canvas top would be from a local fitter.

Superb! Parts are always interesting. Even thought the mechanics for the soft top works ok, it might brake down some day. I do actually need some rubber seals. Can you share with me/us name, address and phone number to the "new" company. Maybe also name and email address to the guy you spoke with?
