Coolant on the engine filler cap and A/C compressor
Is that some green on the cap. That looks like dye leak from the compressor.
Again, center can be a pressure cap, as they are much easier to find as long as it is more than the side. I had problems when they are the same but fitting a 20lb to the center, 16lb on the side, no problems since.

thanks dsetter
yes mate, one of the pics shows some green on top of the cap after driving. It appears to be coolant caused by vapor escaping from this cap. If you have leaking refrigerant from the compressor, would this be the same color?
thanks again for your input

Refrigerant is typically colourless but can be dyed to spot leaks. If it has be done in the past (common) it may be leaking out and leaving a coolant-esque stain. Although when it escapes it tends to do so pretty quickly so would present obvious symptoms equally quickly. Also coolant is unmistakable sticky and sweet - even Blucol, it should be pretty easy to identify.
If your stills struggling have a peak at all 3 short hoses connecting the water pump to cross bar, its below the coolant cap be could feasibly be leaking.

That old A/C compressor uses a "weep" system to lubricate the clutch bearing and it appears to me your "weeping" a little too much which is causing the dye to show itself on you compressor front and adjacent coolant lid...I think your chasing the wrong problem. Put some antifreeze on your finger from under the lid and smell it then after a run smell the "green stuff" on top of the lid and see if they smell different, coolant isn't going to show itself on top of the lid like that. Your first picture looks just like freon dye. Is the insulation above the compressor wet? One of my issues with the old GM compressor is it's "sacrificial" oil/weep system which makes an under hood mess over time.
Different model but this sounds exactly like your problem

Thanks Tyran66 that was a good post. I work on industrial sized air conditioners so a lot of that makes perfect sense to me.
Mate, I'm just about to go back to work (at sea) so might have to get back to this one next month.
I was thinking today the best way for me to be sure is if i clean all the residue up and then drive around without using the A/C for a day. Upon return inspection I shouldn't find any residue if it is refrigerant and not coolant.
Guys again, thanks for the input. It is most appreciated.

Unfortunately I suspect even if you do not use the AC it will still leak because of the fuel cooler that is plumbed from the AC (to prevent vapour lock). Nevertheless its a good step forward. Have a safe voyage and let us know how you get on when you return.
If it is the AC, is there an easy fix? Any loose fittings causing this? Maybe tighten something up... As you can tell, I have no idea about AC systems. LOL.

The fuel cooler is plumed into the A/C but only works when the compressor is "on" ie A/C on, the convertibles were wired where their compressor came on anytime the car was on. not the coupes IIRC.
Cheers guys.
Yeah mine has been modified (apparently a common mod) where my old cruise control switch is now my A/C compressor switch. When I want A/C I flick it past the off position (be it LOW,AUTO or HIGH) and then I turn the old cruise control switch on and it kicks on my compressor.
I should of taken photos but noticed today the spray is evident on the inside of the bonnet. It shows an outline of the engine filler cap in question and also a straight line of spray either side about 20mm.
Tyran66 i drove her a bit today with out the A/C on after a fresh wipe of the filler cap lid, but when i came back home she still had some vapor residue on there. Bummer!
I will get to the bottom of this, but next month now. One more cruise tomorrow, Sunday family BBQ, Monday get ready for work, Tuesday fly out to Asia.
Damn why cant there be more time to play Jaguars!!

Banjo bolt. Its bolt with a hole half way up the thread to bleed fluids out without fully removing it. Your rad has one at the on the top amoungst other places. Also stars in Deliverance alongside the US of A's finest inbreds
this is a banjo bolt it transfers fluid from radiator to the bleed pipe, if you have to use it as a bleed valve there is a major problem, it is situated right side of top rad panel, mind you if you didn't know, I think you had better leave any work to someone more capable. lol
I found these today for the XJ6's, maybe they make one for the V12 too. Call Gary at JagAyre if you want to check it out.
