Correct battery for a 1996 XJS
Hi
i guess it’s time to purchase a new battery . I rarely drive the car so it needs a new battery .
Could you please suggest one ?
Shall I unplug it when if the car is not being started for more then a week or use an external device to save it from being drained ? Some type of “ key “ ?
Thank you

My approach is a little more redneck. I took the old battery out, folded a McDonald's bag into the battery tray to have a size template and bought the largest Optima RedTop battery I could fit in there. The only downside was that the battery poles are in a slightly different spot so the cables required a little tugging. Now even the original battery frame with the wingnuts fits. I don't have electricity in my storage building. So I simply disconnect the negative cable. The battery stays charged for several weeks.

I did an internet search and I have found these models.
Whci one would you recommend?
XS Power D1600 Battery - Universal $ 299
Interstate MT7-48 H6 $275
Interstate MTP-48 H6 $185
Bosch Premium Performance Battery Group, Size H6/L3/48 $140
Super Start Platinum Top Post-Battery $180
To be honest, for the novice like my self, its a bit confusing

I usually go with what Costco has! In Canada at least, they do carry H6. The battery group is a shorthand for the dimensions; so rather than having to specify the length, width and height, they go by groups.
I tend to look at the warantee, how long is the free replacement and how much is prorated? A typical life is about 5 years, so if I can get replacement for 3-4 years that's good. I find the ones that only have 2 year free replacement are typically not that great.

Hi Terry
This is the type of Battery that I use in all my XJS's and my Merc so in the event that one goes down I can easily swap it over for one from another Car
But I've never needed to do that in over 3 Years as I have found these Batteries to be super reliable and hold onto their Charge
The only minor downside, is that the Battery is too high for the clamping frame to go over the top and so I knocked one up out of strip in about 10 minutes
Then covered it in Gaffer Tape to give it some insulation, although the home made Clamp has never moved
One of the most important things is 'Cold Cranking Amps' and so its really always best to go for the Max on that if you can afford it
The Battery that I chose for my Cars, fits nicely in the Tray and if I can remember only cost around £65 as I didn't see much point in spending well over £100 if this does the job
These Exide Batteries are Excellent and have never let me down and stay in the Boot/Trunk of the Car all year round
Where even after the Winter, without any maintenance Charging She always starts first time
I also use a Battery dis-carnect (ebay about £5) one of the Best Pieces of Kit that I have ever bought, as I always turn off the Battery when I come back from a Trip
Where by way of a bit of a Bonus, its another 'hoop to jump through' for any potential thief, who would need to open the Boot/Trunk to turn on the device
As an aside: Just for the sake of experiment, I managed to Start my XJS V12 with the Battery from my Ride on mower
Homemade Battery Clamp
Homemade Battery Clamp insulated with Gaffer Tape and the Battery has been fitted with a dis-carnect isolation switch
Battery dis-carnect, using this I've never had a flat battery in 3 years. The 'black thingy' is a by pass so you can keep the interior clock running but I never use it, as if you've got a small leakage to earth it will run the Battery down
The Battery dis-carnect one of the best pieces of kit that I have ever bought. Just a quick turn on the black knob and you can switch the Battery on or off
