What is correct radio for 1990 XJS?
I just picked up a 1990 XJS convertible and is often the case, the original radio was long gone and replaced with an aftermarket unit.
I want to find a correct OEM radio but I don't know what part number I should be looking for. Was more the one radio available for 1990? What part numbers should I be looking for? Can someone post pictures of a correct radio(s)?
Thank you!

Looks like you'll have to find 1 from a "scrappy" car. Or if the loom has been hacked about, maybe 1 from a later model can fit.

I'm fairly sure that the 1990 cars still used the AJ8700

^^ That's a radio from a 1995-97 X300 sedan! It won't fit a 1990 XJS

Yep, Doug is correct AJ8700,used up to '91 in XJS (US MY). Try to get one with the security code....a lot of scrappers tell you you can get it from your Jag dealer....tried two last year they didn't want to know. There are online sites that will find it for a fee...30 bucks or so.
I heard some where that the code 24255 works on some/a lot? of the AJ8700, but didn't work on my spare.
Rob.

I have a 1990 I removed the original deck from and you can have it. I removed it because I had no code for it and I wanted a cd/usb player for the car. Let me know if you are interested, or if it's worth the cost of shipping.
I will post pictures tonight when I get home.

I hate to say it, but I'm with Safari. I like having a radio, but the original "look" is important to me as well. I went thrugh two of these radios to get a good one. I put all new speakers in, and to me, it sounds just as good as the aftermarket that was in the car when I bought it. The first radio I didn't get a code with, and spent the 30 dollar on line to get it, but it would sound great at first, but would lose its volume after 4 or 5 minutes, and then come and go with a mind of its on.

Safari. Why would you want that awful deck. The sound quality is crap. I have 1 from an 86 you can have. Pulled it the second day I had the car. I have my Ipod connected with 3500 songs. Tossed the cassettes 15 years ago.
You can get a nice deck that matches int look for less than $200.

1. For a car like this I prefer everything to be original and functional.
2. With the road noise associated with a convertible I have no expectations of high-end sound. I'm more than happy with just a basic radio on the few occasions I will use it. Most of the time I listen to the V-12. ;-)
3. Its easy to buy an adapter that is completely hidden but will allow connection of an MP3 player.
OEM look and function with the added MP3 capability is what I want. Best of both worlds.

I have to agree with Safari also. Mind you I still have a flip cellphone.....soooo?
I find the AJ8700 in my 1987 xj6 to be as good to my ears as the Alpine in my 2006 X Type....well my 65 years not withstanding!
The reception is better on both AM and FM.....I'm in the wilds of Nebraska though.
The cassette is great also with the Dolby on....have hundreds of books on tape and cassettes from the 60's/70's and 80's...CD's no problem with the available adapters.

Thanks to a fellow forum member (Gunner01) I was able to restore an original AJ8700 to my 1990 convertible. Now I'm looking for another AJ8700 to install into my '89.
If anyone has a working AJ8700 to offer that has the original connectors and the cosmetics are good please contact me.
Thank you!

I totally understand keeping everything stock. I held out as long as I could with the XJS and E but eventually caved in. My cars are weekend cars but get driven enough if it's sunny during the week, and the lack of bluetooth connectivity with the i phone is too dangerous IMO. Of course now it's also nice to have Sirius XM and the USB port and the good music quality thanks to the amp and the new speakers which I also got, but Iphone bluetooth connectivity is what really did it for me. Hands free talking is an absolute must

In my '89 3.6 the radio is the DAC9531, made by Alpine. Currently I have it keeped and I put a current Alpine with USB (no cassettes, no CD's...just only USB storage).
The radio works fine, but my old cassettes were in bad shape, and I like to listen music in the car, so it was much more practical to put a new USB-radio on. In addition, it looks discreet, with green lighting like the original (Alpine too).
If at any time I want to restore the original appearance of the car, it is just plug & play. Original speakers sound good.

Hi Safari
If you would like to have a look at this post, I was taking the Original Stereo Radio Cassette out of my 1990 XJS V12 to replace it with a more up to date unit, so you will be able to identify the one that you want from the Pics
I'm also keeping the Old one just in case I want to do a Retro Re installation
Jaguar are also producing a range of modern Stereos that look just like the Originals or so I have heard
For everybody else: This post also features a complete Step by Step guide on how to remove the Original Stereo to replace it with a more modern unit
