I agree with Greg, diagnose then fix properly. I don't believe that the mineral oil in the old system is solubale in the R134a refrigerant so that's why it needs purging. Mine worked great with a can of R134a to diagnose the leak until it all came out of the condenser. Long term you'll wreck the compressor through lack of lubricant if you don't refill with PAG oil as suggested.

Compressor works, it's just empty. I'll pick up an adapter and hit it with a can of 134. Thanks!

And sorry for the hijack, although it is on-topic!

It depends on why the compressor isn't coming on.

Broken wire to clutch - ten minute fix - $50

Bad clutch - a few hundred

No refrigerant - most likely - if leak is in evaporator core, junk the car unless you want to spend several weeks replacing it yourself.
woah what?? broken wire to clutch...even if you use a box knife and pliers to crimp it thats about a 10 dollar fix.

bad clutch/compressor 150-200 for another compressor.

if evap is broken then replace..idk the price since ive never checked....but several weeks? what?

im sorry i just hate how bad of a reputation these cars get and while yes they are hard to work on im 20 years old and this is my second car. Its really NOT that bad, i just don't like when people turn every molehill on this car into a mountain

Cost repair is generally the main factor when looking for something new.AC SERVICE CYPRESS recommend a new furnace and new air conditioner if the repair is more than $800. But, if the system is only 6 years old, $800 doesn’t seem that bad of an investment to squeeze a few more years of life out of your system. So,they recommend looking at both the age and the cost of the repair. If your system is more than 10 years old AND will cost more than $800 to repair you should take a serious look at replacing your equipment. Also, if repairs continue to add up over the years of ownership, take this into account. $200 here and $600 next year can really add up.
