1982 XJS Radio Not Working
I have searched the forum with no luck only finding later model info. My original radio is dead. Checked fuses under drivers side dash all good. Other posts on later newer style radios say there is a inline fuse behind radio. Is this also the case with my radio? If so how do I remove the radio to check? I want to keep the cars original radio. Thanks

The earliest model year electrical schematic I have is 1989, and for that year there were two inline fuses and a relay that could be issues.

1. Remove the Fan and Heater control knobs.
2. On the knob shafts you will find nuts. Remove the nuts.
3. Now the bezel plate should be free and can be removed.
4. The radio is most likely held in with just regular screws. Remove them and the radio should slide out. (See note below)
5. You should be able to pull the radio out far enough to disconnect the power and speaker connectors, antenna and ground strap.
6. Reverse this process to reinstall radio.
Note: On some radios I have found that plastic rivets were used instead of screws to attached the radio to the dash. If yours has the plastic rivets you will have to pry them out of the holes to free the radio.

There is a fuse in a white, in-line holder under the ski slope. It is to the left of the gear select lever, generally taped and/or held down by a cable tie. Just remove the three screws holding the ski slope down, lift up, disconnect the power window plugs, and hang it off the right side of the console by the cigarette light cables. Fuse is generally a 2 or 3 amp fuse for original radios.

jal1234, I accessed two inline fuses on the side of the ski slope. Replaced both fuses with new even though both appeared to be good. One was a 3 amp and other was a 1 amp. Unfortunately the radio is still not working. Any other fuses you guys can think of?
Did I read on here that the heating system can leak fluid behind the dash and onto the radio? When I got the car it had a lot of mildew on the leather. Car has always been garage kept in south Florida all of its life up until about 7 months ago when we moved up north. I always figured this may have been from the hot and humid climate and a tear in the drivers side door seal. I was able to clean off the leather but it now has spots that have stained the leather where the mildew was. Maybe I'm way over thinking the radio not working!!!

Did you check to see if you were getting power to the fuses? If the radio shows any signs of corrosion once you get it out, it is likely toast. But ensure you are getting power at the fuses and at the radio connector. Wire colors and connectors at the radio are very inconsistent, but the red and yellow wires provide power, one switched, and the other unswitched. Checked between those two wires and a good ground with the ignition on.
