Default day running lights

I read on the Canadian thread that cars imported into the country must have the headlight on feature activated. Anyone know if a 1992 MY XJS is pre-wired for the headlights to be used as DRL ?

No they were not wired that way. If you want to do it go to Daniel Stern Lighting Consultancy and Supply. He has diagrams to do that as well as other usefull information.

Well, after looking at the diagrams l thought l just needed 3 relays'......But after looking at the car...l need the loom parts as well, but cant seem to find any reference to part numbers.

Couldn't find a way to just plug things in soooooo, I've now just got into the habit of turning the headlights on when starting the car..........lol

My Canadian 1992 XJS does not have DRLs. It was sold new in Toronto. It does have tiny 5w wedge-base bulbs within the Euro-style headlamps, that come on with the side marker lights giving an yellow-orangy glow and off with the headlights on. But standard operation in the day is all lights off.

Yes I did look, But not what l was looking for although had some good info about headlight setup. thanks.


Reading some Canadian comments about importing Jags l thought that the cars were pre-wired for it, they had the US dealer add DRL before they drove their Jags home. Maybe it was a later year requirement. Anyway, its "Clunk, click click before every trip..." for those of you who remember that old UK seatbelt campaign lol

As a 92 the daytime running light are not nessassary in Canada as they were not prewired that way. I wired my running lights to come on with ignition. Not that I needed to I just like the look.
I had a 64 Dodge without seatbelts and that pass inspection as they were not standard equipment.

check on the web. Jaguar in London Canada wanted $ 2500.00 for the change over. I purchased 2 relays which are used on the Canadian models, for about $ 150.00 . had the conversion done by myself in about 15 minutes, and had a cup of coffee at the same time. Canadian Tire ( they verify the car meets Canadian standards ) didn't even check for the daytime running lights.
Could have saved my $ 150.00.

Might have saved some money...then again they might save your life! With such a low profile car any visibility improvement is, I think, a welcome thing.

I've wired mine so that the front turn signal lamps come on with the engine, as well as the fog lights.

The studies that lead to Canada adopting DRLs were later shown to be flawed and inaccurate. Countries that have DRLs do not have lower accident rates than similar countries with no DRLs.

One serious flaw with the way many cars here are wired is that the dash lamps illuminate with the DRLs. At dusk, there is no visual cue for the driver to turn the full lights on, so it is very common to see cars after dark with no taillights. I'd be willing to bet that the stats would indicate an increase in rear-end collisions since DRLs were introduced. Another lose-lose for bureaucracy!

DRLs served a purpose other than safety. They were a barrier to trade between Canada and the USA to offset the implementation of the FTA (Cda-USA Free Trade Agreement). They made the cars in Canada different in part to quash individual importations.

Cars in Canada have always been certified to different standards, sometimes making conversion difficult, expensive or impossible. Activating DRLs would not stop anybody wanting to import, a mere inconvenience.

Back in the early '80s l fitted some Volvo sidelights, which had the DLR feature way back then, to a custom van I had (jeeez, remember those days). I wired them up so that when the DLR were lit the dashboard light didn't. A simple way to nudge me that at night my main lights were not on. I have often thought that this should have been incorporated into todays DLR as a safety feature.....or just include the rear lights into the DLR circuit......simples...Most probably far to simple for Gov. workers though !

It would be even simpler to have auto-on lights at dusk. Many cars have them now anyway.
