I use any name brand 80/90 GL5 gear oil. Some already have a limited slip additive and will say so. If not you'll need to buy some. The GM part number is 1052358 but (here in the USA, at least) every local parts store carries an equivalent.

I think the capacity is about 2.25 US quarts

Someone with a manual close to hand will verify

Cheers

Use Castrol Syntrax LSD, this is the best and most easily available in the UK. Do not use non-LSD diff oil, they are not the same.
Amazon Amazon
Most places have it.

IMO, leave it alone. But, I have a pretty high degree of tolerance of oil leaks. I only go after the gushers. Oooozers and tiny-drippers I ignore on any old car.

I'm quite surprised that this is the only thread on the differential I can find. I want to learn more about it and what oil, how often to change, etc. but this is the only one I can find. Surely there are others?? I'm wanting to learn how to do it myself after checking to see if it needs to be done.

Changing it/checking the level is a good plan every 20,000 miles or so, I think. If you have a diff with a drain plug, this is relatively easy. If not, and the DANA diffs like mine do not, not so easy. Fill is also hard work, but quite doable axle in car.
My solution is to change the diff oil every time I have the rear axle out to fix the brakes or something else. Seems to happen about every few years...
You must used diff oil specially made for LSDs though, as noted with an example in the posts above.

I change diff oil every 30k miles

First and foremost, never remove a drain plug on anything until you are sure you can also remove the fill plug

Reaching the fill plug for checking the level or adding oil can require some contortions but it's doable. Removing the tie-plate helps quite a bit, in my experience....but doing so is, in itself, a bit of a chore. Lots of fasteners.

Before removing the fill plug brush away any debris/dirt in the area so it doesn't inadvertently fall into the hole

To top-off or re-fill I use a rubber hose hose attached to the bottle of diff oil and just squeeze the bottle to push the oil through the hose.

Cheers

Hi. I have a 1990 XJS with the axle out right now. I will be changing the diff fluid, Does anyone have a picture of where the fill hole is? I see the hole for the sensor. Is that it ?
