My latest usual "late night " ebay purchases are a pair of body coloured door mirrors. Keep wondering if l should take the chrome ones off and fit them.
I did try fitting 1 and the wiring seems to be fixed inside the door. So guessing door panel off job. Bugger !!
You should be able to fit facelift mirrors without taking off the door panel.
From memory, the plugs may be clipped to something on the door, but they can definitely be freed up. The rule is that must not disconnect them from the mirror, when you remove the mirror, without first attaching a piece of string to them, as they will fall back into the door void . Then you WILL have to remove the panel if you can't pull them back up with the string!
I stand corrected! I've just reviewed my pics from 10 years ago, and I did take off the door panel and then accessed the plugs from the front corner access aperture. See my pic below
Remember to tie a piece of string to stop the plugs falling into the door aperture whilst the mirror is out.
And.... extremely carefully!! Pull it back the smallest amount to enable you to get to the screw head. And carefully come at the screw from an angle (not ideal) to minimise the amount that you need to move that chrome collar. Maybe even lubricate the leather with a bit of polish first to avoid it catching and ripping.

And replace the original pozi setscrew with an Allen key headed one. This is far easier to undo and also means the collar does not have to be pulled back so far the next time.
Ok. I finally got down on my knees and attacked the doors to replace the mirrors. Thanks all who posted about this job.
Sooooo, not as bad as l thought it would be. The facelift car doesn't have that convenient screw hole as the pre-facelift car,
i had to carefully unclip the chrome cover and slowly move it away up the arm to free access to the screw. unscrewed a couple of under the arm box lifted upwards and off it came... just unplugged the door light and had access to the mirror plugs was easy. The plugs on my early '91 were clipped onto a metal bracket and the mirror easily unplugged and pulled through the door. Fitting the new mirror was simply the reverse procedure.
