Drive belts - pre and post face lift - 6 cylinder
Hello
I have a problem getting the main serpentine drive belt for my car - 1992 XJS coupe, 4 litre engine, Getrag manual. Apparently my car is "early facelift" which means it is sort of a mixture of pre facelift and post facelift (SIN circa 180000). So I got a new serpentine belt - Continental AVX13X975 - which according to the Jaguar dealer is correct for my car. But my friendly mechanic says that it is the right length but 4 ply and the original is 3 ply and narrower. So the new belt is too wide. Has anyone else experienced this, and have they got specifications/item numbers for the right belt.
I started a new thread for this because the previous discussions of belts didn't specify whether they were dealing with V12 or 6 cylinder. My car has two belts, not the three or four others are talking about.
I noticed that many of the belt "kits" sold online are kits of three belts and as I mention, my car has two.

I will assume?? that the "ply" you mention is the flat belt groove number??
Down here we keep it simple.
3PK is 3 groove
4PK is 4 groove.
5PK is 5 groove.
See the pattern?, the length is a constant.
My listings are:
From the Dayco Aust Catalogue.
XJS 7/92 t0 8/97 BUILD DATE, with the 4ltr engine.
13A0965 A/C
11A1005 W/pump & Alt.
These are both "V" belts of different profile, and NOT flat PK belts.
NOW
Same engine in the Sedan beasts. Same Build Date of 1992, and designated AJ6 engine.
5PK0980 alt & W/pump.
4PK1035 A/C.
ALSO
The AJ16 engines is the same belt part numbers as the AJ6.
Thats as simple as belts are for these beasts, not many options.
BUT
Your market may have had different specs, dunno.

billmgeo,
The 4.0 XJS doesn't use a Serpentine belt, it just uses 2 or 3 traditional single belts depending on whether an Air Pump is fitted. The first belt is driven from the crank and drives the Water Pump and the Alternator. The second belt also runs from the crank and drives the Aircon compressor. I'm guessing that with your 2-belt setup, that you don't have an Air pump fitted on your 4 litre.
See the Jaguar Parts website here for the part numbers: https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic.../brand/jaguar/
From this you can probably establish if your Continental belt purchase is the correct item.
Good luck

Thanks Grant and Paul, for the comments.
So, the local Jag dealer gave me two Continental belts - as mentioned previously. One was correct - the AVX13X975. The other - the alternator belt - (5PK980 "Multi V Belt") was incorrect. My car, being VIN around 180000 is before the change at VIN 185819 (XJS, 6 cylinder 4 litre). So the correct second belt is in fact EAC7033, or NAPA0400390 4PK994 "Micro V".
This same belt is listed for many Jaguars with the same 4 litre engine such as Vandem Plas and XJ6 (1988-1992). In fact on some websites the belt is listed for all except the XJS.
Other numbers for that belt include, I htink, DAYCO P311-4036187.
