Default Driver door dilemma

1987 XJ-S V12, LHD.

Can't open driver side door from outside. Can open door from inside. The outside handle has no resistance when I pull up on it. Guessing that a linkage has popped out somewhere, but after removing the inside door panel I see no way to access the assembly.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

John

I have not removed my xjs door panels yet. On the xj40 though it is very tight in there. Usually if I need to work in that area I end up using a flashlight to get a reference point and then in with the fingers.
You can access good parts blow-ups at SNGBarratts or Jaguar themselves. Seeing the pic of what I am dealing with always helps.

Hello J_C_R

When I brought mine - the passenger door would open, but not lock, and it turned out my central locking motor was past its used by date (not quite the same issue as yours I realize).
When I did the paint job, I removed the door handles with only the inner door panel off, but when it came to putting the door handle back in - my vet skills let me down, so the window came out, which allowed me more room to connect the rods.
It also gave me the chance to change the tinting on the windows

It was really one of those jobs that developed into many

Is your door similar to my photo, By memory, I got down on the ground and put my hand up the rectangle slot (the one with the plastic still in it in the photo). You might be able to feel a loose rod?

Cheers
Steve

Thanks for the replies.

Yes, I can feel a loose rod, but I can't determine (see) why it's loose or where it goes...or what needs to happen to the rod to keep it from slipping out again, if that is indeed the problem.

I removed the end cap (the silver housing that holds the door latch) but I can see only part of the mechanism, and the issue seems to be somewhere up where, even if lying directly below it, I can't see anything loose.

This may require drastic action.

Thanks,

John

Look up this part number and bit. Might end up getting you going down the right road. I think there are only 2-3 rods up in there and it seems this (although not easy to find) might end up being a thing on all our cars, soon.

get 40 of them for 0.00£, lol
