Default Dropped valve seat ?

Had a short in auxiliary fan, temp went sky high. Parked got out noticed fan not running, thought guage maybe wrong. Next day a real bugger to crank. Poof of smoke and a clank from back of engine. Shut her down. Couple days later cranks with no problem no real loud ticking. Seems to idle a little rough....how can i tell for sure ???also AC Is finally working and now this...tks

Only way to know for sure is to do a compression check. If a cylinder has dropped a seat it will have very low compression or none at all.

Mark has it nailed.

That death CLACK is what it is, and there is no shortcuts with a repair.

Yeah, probably. Way back when my camperized 63 Corvair van
would "'drop" a cylinder and run on five, at times. Not consistent.
Fuel and ignition faults ruled out. Compression decent, til I checked
it at a 5 cylinder only time. 0 in one hole!!! Not good news, but at least I knew the heads had to come off. Not that hard, actually.
Just work on my back and up and down for tools. Nice clean garage floor to work on!!!

Yup, one seat adrift. At times, the valve would apparently reset the seat and the cylinder would fire!!!!

Battered a bit, though. Machine shop welded it up. Ground it, cut
a new groove and set a seat. Promised it was tighter than the original.

He showed me some failed examples and some patched ones. One had stakes around the perimeter of the seat. Seats still seated but gruesome looking???

Put it back together with some added "goodies". It ran great, well for all it's 98HP!!!
