Default DTC code P1187

Check engine light came on this morn. Plugged in the code reader, got code P1187 "variant selection". Any tips on how to get more specific? 1995 XJS, 4.0L. Thanks

The Jaguar DTC Listing is a lot more specific. See 'Possible Causes' in the right hand column:

Once I've identified and recorded a powertrain code, I usually clear it and do the required number of 'trips' to see if it returns. Amazing how often it doesn't!

Thanks for the tips. I cleaned the connectors to the O2 sensors and cleared the code. Has not re appeared yet. Also the car is hard to start sometimes. It will turn over for a bit and then I have to give it some gas for it to fire up, sometimes it will start right up though. Any ideas what to look for? Once again thanks very much.

Default P1187 fault returned

Code 1187 returned. What diagnostics can be performed to pinpoint the faulty component? I have a multimeter, just need to know what voltages and resistances to look for and the connector pin numbers to get the readings from. Thanks for all the help.

Although I have the DTC listing for this model, I don't have the Workshop Manual which will have the pinpoint test procedures.

Default DTC p1187 -found problem

I think I found the problem, I did a resistance check on the heater element for both the upstream sensors. One sensor read about 6 ohms the other sensor showed open, that one was for cylinders 4,5,6. I put in a new sensor, reset the computer. Did a resistance check on the new sensor before I installed it, the new sensor read about 6 ohms for the heater element. Will find out in a couple of days if the check engine light comes back on. I hope not.
