Back around 1990 there were 3 of these cars in Fort Worth TX. The dealer WOULD NOT work on them because they were GREY MARKET imported from Belgium or Germany??
I worked at a shop down the street from the Jaguar dealer so we serviced all 3 cars.
I still have an engine air filter NIB for these cars.

The 3.6 is over 200 lbs lighter than the V12 and easily keeps up with the V12 up to 70 MPH. The manual tested by Autocar made 60 mph in 7.1 seconds in standard trim. In The UK the 3.6L never had a catalytic converter
and was comfortably the quickest 6 cylinder XJS made.
I owned a 5.3 V12 XJS for 2 years back in the eighties and I currently drive a 1990 3.6 with the 5 speed Getrag manual.
For highway cruising the V12 is unbeatable for smoothness but always felt to me like a big saloon car wearing a party frock .
The later ( 1988 on ) 3.6L cars all had Sportspack suspension and the loss of 200 lbs sitting under the bonnet totally tranformed the character and dynamics of the car.
The 3.6 AJ6 cars are almost as smooth as the V12 and offer a much more exciting and involving driving experience. Contemporary tests preferred it's handling characteristics to the Porsche 944.
Autocar ended the test saying
' This is the car the XJS should always have been '.
Horses for courses really, but as a fast cross country GT I prefer the 6 cylinder car.
Just my cents worth

I have an 84 that's one of the two dozen 3.6 test cars that were U.S. emission specced etc and my car has hotter engineering cams than the Euro cams the Ebay car probably has. I'd expect that car could even be more than 200 lbs lighter than a v12. My car is just under 3300 lbs but it was a test mule etc. I completely agree with the above comments that these cars are quicker and handle more like a sports car than grant tourer.
These early engines developed run issues from an engine vacuum loss that usually necessitates sending the ECU to Roger Bywater to have an adjustment screw installed to allow compensation in the fuel/air mix. I'm not sure the euro cars used cibi headlamps in 86 ... possibly upgraded headlamps and wheels. A repaint could necessitate sandblasting if Jag was still using the same compound used on my car. If that car's been off the road (and it likely has) ... there'll be teething issues and some failures breaking her back in ... but once that period is suffered through, they're really great driving cars bullet proof and get really decent mileage with the 5 speed. 4th gear is 1:1 and 5th is about .7:1.
Cheers,
Rob
