Default Failed Fuel Pump Diagnosis

So, jumped in the XJS today, ignition on before cranking, waiting for my aftermarket fuel pressure gauge to rise...... and nothing :-(

Open the trunk, repeat ignition off and on again, relays clicking on and off for 2 seconds (pump priming routine driven by ECU), but no fuel pump whirring noise :-(

Disconnected fuel pump wiring, checked with volt meter.... pump is getting 12V during 2 second priming cycle.

Connected pump directly to battery, no whirring noise.

(of course the car also won't start... I tried, just in-case my fuel pump had suddenly become whisper silent, AND my fuel pressure gauge had stopped working)

My amazing powers of deduction tell me that my fuel pump is dead.

If so, does anyone have a particular favourite pump to do a replacement with ?? Delphi seems to come up a lot, and it is more expensive (which I know is not always guaranteed to be directly related to quality...)

Any advice welcomed to either confirm my suspicions and / or to recommend a good replacement pump type.

Wishing everyone else a better start to their weekend :-)

I use Bosch pumps coz they are easily available down here, and the Bosch BFP070 for the XJ-S (and othe EFI Jags) is also used on our Commodores, Falcons, some BMW, MERC, SAAB, etc, and is now listed as a "universal" external EFI pump. About $120 here new, and $25 from the wreckers from any of the listed cars, coz they NEVER get Jags to wreck, hahaha.

Just be sober (or close to it) when fitting the replacement, as some have the +ve and -ve terminals different to the original pump, and if you wire it wrong, NO BIG DEAL, the pump just runs backwards and the car still dont start, duh, alcohol is then required in huge amounts.

Hi Grant

Thanks for the advice (both on fuel pumps and alcohol!) I ordered a Delphi unit after reading several reviews so hopefully that's going to do the trick.

The fuel gauge had always been erratic on the car, so I'm going to fit a new sender unit while I'm at it.

I also always have problems filling the tank quickly, lots of blow back, so I'll get a good look at the breathers while the tanks out too.

Basically I think it's just what you should expect after 20 years of use I guess

Have a good weekend

Scott
