Final drive oil and shaft grease fitings-1996 4.0
Do these final drives have limited slip? Am I supposed to use some special oil in them?
Have any of you greased the drive shafts? Can you do that best with the road wheels hanging down with the transmission in neutral?

AFAIK all XJSs have limited slip. Some gear oils already has the friction additives for limited slip....as identified on the labeling.
Lacking that, use regular gear oil (any name brand will do, IMHO) and add a friction modifier. Most places sell a small bottle of friction modifier or go to a local GM dealer and get part number 1052358
The half shaft grease fittings can be a little tricky as the angle of the u-joint itself can sometimes block access....so the wheels usually have to be rotated...which means having them hang free
Cheers

Doug, I managed to grease the u-joints and the swing arm. I could not see the fill plug on the differential although the drain plug is plainly visible. The manual shows the plug but it is not there on my '96. Do you know where it is?
Being under the car I found that the right axle seal in the differential is leaking and has been for quite a while. Not a real big leak, though. That looks to be quite a job so may leave it to a shop.
