Default Floor pans

I just wondered if anyone has replaced the front of the floor pans and if they have any photos of how they did it. Many thanks for any assistance

I have not replaced floor pans, but I have done a few welding repairs to rust in my XJS. The best way to join panels is to but weld them, you can lap join them but the lap can rust again as water can get in between the metal.

I practiced my welding on scrap panel sheet until I could tack weld the edges without burning through. Then I tackled the repair. You can buy MIG's with a stitch function mine does not haven this, I used FULL POWER and tacked quickly. DO NOT try to bead weld the metal is too thin. Tack in different spots at each end to let the weld cool, this reduces warping.

It's not floor pans but here are some of my welding repairs.

My 2017 project also . . . so best wishes, Brinny . . . if you are doing this work, please keep us posted on your progress.

I have purchased the 2 floorpans, but not yet started the strip down. Hoping I can replace them without the full "rotisserie" method commonly used by pro resto firms. However, I have yet to fully test the adjoining sills and tunnel panels . . . they seem firm but the skeptic in me is not yet satisfied

Thanks again to Warren for his great resto resource. Perhaps Warren might comment on how much can be achieved without a "rotisserie" upside-down approach - eg your R&R of the rear radius arm cups pictured. Likewise, I am taking plenty of pics . . . at this stage, to record what is there now . . . yeah, it's my memory, and I keep on misplacing it! Once done, I will start a blog-like thread when the interesting stuff begins on my path towards a "long snout" XJ-Spyder.

Best wishes,

Ken

Hi and thanks for the input. I've had a good day at it today and after fitting some sill repairs previously I got the old pan out and a new one in. I was quite pleased with the fit and it's all ready for welding up tomorrow. A couple of more patches to fit at the front and then to the rear. It's going to take time but one day it will be worth it!

Hi Brinny

For someone who's never done Welding before Lnr did an Amazing Job on the Floor Pans of her XJ6 and although its not an XJS.

It might give you some ideas.
