Default Front Stub Axle Removal

Anyone here changed out their stub axles - how did you get them out ? - is a press the only option ? - I've been fighting one for a couple of hours and nothing is budging it.

If you need a press what sort of tonnage is needed to pop these things ?

Strange, mine came out by hand once the rear nut was removed. If the knuckle is still on the car and access is limited I'd try a slide hammer arrangement to persuade it out. What have you tried so far?

Couple of light taps is all I was anticipating, got really brassed off and reached for the 5lb lump hammer and gave it absolutely everything against a rather robust bench vice and it popped but it required a little rage - now I need to paint the darn upright again.

Note to self or anyone - don't get carried away with paint etc unless you are 110% certain work on the item is complete ..... I thought I would get away with the stubs but after trying new bearings on them decided against.

Took a hydraulic press for my 90, the originals were very much in place.

Ben
You did the right thing. I placed my upright on two solid blocks of wood, one each end of the upright, close up to the stub, then a HUGE whack with the lump hammer, and they came out on the third!

I'm not surprised I actually bent the end I hit it so hard. One thing is 100% for sure no way could this job succeed on the car so I'm glad I tackled it, in case anyone wonders why I didn't use a puller I have one word - experience - I actually bent a Mercedes sprinter upright trying to get the brake disc off..

100% right, it needs a shock load.
