I have gone through the complete fuel system on my 89 convertible. Everything has been replaced but I still have a whiff of fuel. I have I believe narrowed it down to the fuel pump area. The top hose does not seem to have a smell but the bottom fuel pipe and the pump do . Could the pump be the cause even though it’s new.? Has anyone had this problem with a pump. It is not a strong smell and I had to get right next to it today to smell it strongly although there was a whiff when I lifted the boot lid. I have tightened all fuel clips and wonder if it may be a legacy odour? Any help gratefully received.

Assuming the fuel system on your car is the same as on the coupe, there is a large diameter hose leading from the sump tank to the pump. Have you renewed this hose? If not, I would, if you have it is most likely that the hose is leaking slightly where it joins the pump. In this place i would use a fuel pipe clip (of this type, not dimension)

Hi Greg, yes I have changed that hose and it was a good fit and does not smell. If it is a hose I think it is the one from the pump to the filter. It smells a bit on the body of the pump and it’s that making me wonder. Will try a different clip on the bottom hose. Thanks

 

Honestly,,, I don't like the way that my fuel pump, hoses and such,,, right next to the battery, is all set up and I've been wondering what I might do (or be able to do) about it. It's loud and I also notice a wiff of gas in the trunk at times. Everything just seems so bunched up with the tire in place. Afraid to touch the whole set up. Then, the pump leans on metal and makes noise. I tried an adhesive backed sense foam rubber, also leaving 1/2 of the pump exposed thinking about heat, but yeah - I want to figure something else out.

Did you use fuel injection hose for the big tank to little tank (and little tank to the fuel pump inlet) - or did you use low pressure hose.

While that side of things is very low pressure - low pressure hoses can have permeation issues. The other thing is to use baby powder around the joints and leave for a while

Thanks for the help and suggestions. No one mentions the pump and I'm inclined to think it's the outlet hose from the pump so I will try new hose and clips and see if that works. Many thanks

 

This follows the same principle (only a lot more expansive). Basically spray the white powder over the joint in question and leave site for a while. If the powder changes colour - there is an issue
