Fuel pump stopping/ when hot/ works again later
Sorry for another post. I had one yesterday about erratic idling. I’m not sure if these are related. Today I stalled leaving work. Thankfully I was near a parking lot. When I tried restarting it, the fuel pump would loudly kick on, but it would barely idle. After sitting about 20 minutes I tried again and it started fine. 20 minutes later into my drive home, same thing. Fuel pump would kick on but same burbling short starts. Another 40 minutes this time and it started. Fuel pump and main relay were very hot, not sure if that’s normal? I’m thinking it’s a bad fuel pump, but why would time allow it to start again? Am I on the wrong track? Thanks everyone for the assistance along the way. New car this summer.
Well if the pump is dying, then it may be heating up as it tries to do a job it can no longer do. Once it overheats, it protects itself by shutting off. Once it cools off, its ready to try again.
You wanna give us a hint on which model year and engine? Could be helpful.

Your explanation was my thought and hope, especially since the pump seems louder than what I’d expect. But older threads went a lot into other possibilities, with similar symptoms.
Which engine please? If a prefacelift car this sounds to me, as it does to Vee, like a pump failure, which is probably also stressing the relay because of current flows all over the place.
new pumps arenot dear, so I would change it without delay, but also check carefully that the sump tank strainer filter is not blocked and the feed from the tank to it is also not blocked.

Hi Stone
It sounds like the Main Fuel Filter in the Boot/Trunk may need Changing, as something similar used to happen on my 1990 Pre-Facelift XJS V12 and also change the Fuel Pump as suggested
These Fuel Pumps are Generic and as such fitted to loads of different Cars and because they are so easy to Change even by the Side of the Road if needs be, I only ever use the 'El Cheapo' ones, that can be bought on ebay for about £30 and also carry a Spare one 'just in case'
Though having said that my Generic Pump is still going strong some 5 years later!
