Good day gents.
This has indeed been discussed various times and I believe I read them all, but my issue is that I think I have a different set up than any discussed before? Hence still need a bit of guidance.
Yes, fuel smell in the trunk and I opened the cover to see the below.
The two thin tubes coming out from the middle are fixed in a way that I can easily shake them. Is this some sort of press fit connector? And how do I pull it out if I need to? Obviously they could send odors out being so loosely fixed, or not?
From what I read so far, I am guessing that one is to relieve out and the other to breathe in, right? So in order to check these lines, all I need is to blow through them and ensure easy air passage?
I also read that they end up on certain models (like mine) up in front at the charcoal canister but with most photos or diagrams there were only one small and one lare rochester valve, where as I have 3, photos below. Where do I go from here and how do I check each individual valve?
The canister seems to have a broken (or no) filter on top as when I tip it over, the charcoal pour out easily. I will open it to see whats happening but how do I check or revive the charcoal inside?
Is there a diagram showing how my set up should be like?
One last question, if the rubber seal on top of the tank has shrunk due to age and allowing smell to go from there, is it advisable to put around it some silicone to seal it well instead of removing for replacement?
Any and all advice will be appreciated as I embark on this issue which has been with the car since I purchased it 20 years ago !!
What year is yours? On my 86 it always smelled of fuel in the trunk/boot. I got a new rochester valve and started to install but in the end I simply removed all that stuff, there is now just a vent to atmosphere (outside the trunk). Car doesnt smell anymore and neither does the garage.
The fuel tank often rusts and splits at the bottom due to faulty design (it sits on a screw or bolt). I had this on my 1982 HE which had zero rust anywhere, but a leaking/split fuel tank
Hello again gents and many thanks for chipping in.
Here is where I am now, since I had waited a while to get replies to my enquiry, and in the meantime have been occupied with other projects, came back the other day and had a look at the car and to make a conscious decision as to when I should start working on it again. But before that, I looked at the replies in case there is something new.
In the meantime, of course the charcoal canister and the rochester valves have been removed. I opened the boot and not a smell of gas at all !!
I guess problem solved as indicated nickr76 for which I thank you.
I will tidy the car up, drive it and fill it to the brim and see if it remains smell clean as currently I have about half a tank, and also see if driving it may have a smelling effect.
So, thank you gents for your suggestions and help but looks like this is it.
I will still be tempted to return everything back once I feel they are in good working order and see if the result is good, but not sure when that might happen as I am currently quite busy with 2 of my other cars that I would like to finish asap, a 1970 BMW 2800 CS and a 1967 Mercedes 250 SL.
