Default A Great Ebay Ad

I know that there aren't many facelift convertible fans out there, but this ad is worth reading.

That description is quite the novel.

Given what these cars seem to be going for on EBay lately, it's a little risky to list it without a reserve.

It looks like someone will get a bargain unless there is a rush at the end.

An exhaustive description in all senses of the word.

Four cars. Is this a usual graduation present in the US?

"So why sell such a great collectible car like this, our daughter received the car as a graduation present along with a 1971 Ford Mustang Convertible, a 1964 Pontiac GTO and Brand New Jeep Cherokee !!!"

Yes. In some cases the four cars come along with breast augmentation and/or nose cosmetic surgeries!!

Default Would you?

Hi Guys,

I've been looking at this ad for a few days.....alternator needs replacing, and the seats restoring.....apart from that it looks great. The question is "would you take the gamble?".

Hmmmmm, sounds pretty much like the situation I got myself into, but at least this guy is honest, and describing the faults ............well at least some of them........
Mine has those faults and a few more for good measure, such as the 'as new' top .............maybe it was new sometime .........anyway I took the gamble, and I'll get it fixed, just takes a bit of time. Always difficult buying a car sight unseen ...............

I'd want to see it in person or have one of those inspection companies go check it out. For about $300 you can get a pretty thorough cosmetic inspection and general mechanical inspection in time to decide if you want to bid on it.

Or skip that and see if the owner would drive it to a qualified repair shop for a more thorough mechanical inspection, maybe even a leakdown test.

I guess that remains to be seen. Unless someone here picked it up and let's us know the whole story on it....
But that does seem to be right around the going price these days.

Actually, the car may be even more rare than the ad states. According to a chart from Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust, the total number of XJS convertibles built in 1994 is 28 worldwide, however, that number may be calendar year, not model year.

But "rare", "desirable", and "collectible" are not always synonymous. Just because there ain't many doesn't necessarily mean it's worth a lot.

I agree that one doesn't always equal the other. Was just shocked at so few produced.

So true. This can go either way. Rare car so worth a fortune. Or low production because nobody wanted it and still don't.

So what's the magic formula for when a car goes from "used" to "classic" and "collectible"? There are even Pacers and Gremlins out there going for $10k+

The magic formula comes down to how much money you can squeeze out of someone, and whether or not you can set precedent after the sale.

I bought my XJS from a beautiful car collection. Is it collectable? Well, he collected the thing. I paid a bit more than I should have at $11,500, but I knew I could sell out for half-again as much if I took it up to Main Line PA when spring hatched. I saw the money so I moved fast.

Since I ended up keeping the car, I suppose I've been had.

TIP: If you really like a certain car, stay away from them when buying and selling.

If I'd have sold it, it would have been billed as a "classic" car for the slightly twisted and "well-informed" luxury GT buyer. I'd have gone after males between 30 and 40 shopping for modern German convertible grayness, playing their (implanted) feelings of rebelliousness.

It's a classic if someone believes it, and it's worth what they pay for it.

I've sold far less for far more.

The guy's advertisement is informative and personal, but his ability to put that information to use in a person's mind is lacking. A text advertisement is all about narrative. I just found the text of one of my favorite listings; a precision shot at a specific kind of buyer. I'll post it if you want, though it's not an XJS.

He also seriously dropped the ball on the pictures. If you aren't a photographer, pay someone who is. You'll get the money back.

Kennith13,

Thanks, very good points you make.
Every car is a classic to someone out there, but a very rare car indeed that is a classic to everyone. And yes please, I'd love to read the ad.

LOL.

I posted it, but it's quite long. I don't want to pollute the thread, so unless the moderator says it's okay to post, I'll just PM it to you in a while.

Both cars have sold, so it's not going to cause a problem there. It's relevant to the title, but only as another advertisement.

This is a useful site for tracking recent ebay sales of a particular make/model/year. I think it goes back 1 year. The seach function on ebay doesn't always go back very far.
