There are no current "drop in" replacements for R12, people love throwing that claim around, especially refrigerant manufactures! Read 11 on the link.

The following is a quote from the manufacturer's literature.
"Use of existing charging equipment:
The equipment currently used for existing
refrigerants requires no modification or change
for charging hydrocarbon refrigerants.
Since no retrofitting is required, HyChill
refrigerants are the perfect "drop in" solution
for systems, which previously used gases
such as CFC R12, HFC R134a, HCFC
R22, R502, R11 and others."

We have one down here. Hychill -30, runs lower pressure than 134 and more closely resembles r12. I am am using it with no problems to date. Hychill can be explosive AND is flammable, once again a manufacture throwing around the "drop in" phrase.

I found that the new A6 aluminum compressor in the picture above will NEVER fit on a later facelift XJS.
The fuel rail is much lower than a pre facelift XJ-S, so the refrigerant hose interferes the fuel hose between the fuel rail.
In addition, another lighter compressor (so called S6 compressor) of which I attach the picture isn't a very good product. I bought one and it failed in half a year, claimed an exchange and it failed in 6 months later again! In the end the guarantee period is over with those 2 compressors and I have nothing now for more than $300.
Then I tried to fit the aluminum compressor above on my 92 XJS but couldn't fit.
I am wondering what to choose next...

In this tutorial He uses Dust Off as a refrigerant to charge my a/c system, the chemical you are looking for on the can is Difluoroethane cas#75-37-6
buy at walmart... can thingy on amazon and the gauges on ebay/amazon...

OMG, I've officially seen it all now. Just stick to R134/EPA approved refrigerant. WTH is the matter with people? My XJS with R134 in it for 8 years will freeze you right out of the cabin on low in the hot FL summer (yes I'm using the stock compressor, evap, condenser). "dust off" save that for your keyboard.

"Hot Shot" or blends of 134a are more efiicient and cheap now compared to R12.
I have had good results with adding 1-2 lbs of refrigerant. As long as the sytem doesn't need evacuated (due to seals, physical leak).

Be very careful with the replacement one. It says it has Teflon, that's the number one reason the Fx15 and FS10 ford compressors suffer the "Black Death". The Teflon melts when the compressor goes south and goes through the whole system. The other problem is if one piston goes south the rest keep churning and the Teflon gets through everything. If you hear anything unusual out of that new compressor, pull the plug on it and get it out of there. Hopefully she runs long and strong for you.

So what other modern choices? I've heard of some folks using line filters, although I've never seen one. Will that circumvent this dire possibility?
Also, where are folks getting the dryer? The two kits shown on rockauto have different dryers fittings and layout compared to my S3 XJ12:

Hmm, I'm in need of an ac component overhaul and I see that the retro-air unit has Teflon pistons as well:

The dryers for the pre facelift (at least, I do not know if the FL is different)) are cheap and available from the normal suppliers, eg:

It is not a bad idea to renew the evaporator valve too, though a pain, and requires GREAT care with the cabin side of the join to be supported by a spanner (wrench to you!) to prevent the copper pipe twisting off.
