Default HE bumpers on pre HE cars

Hi all.
I just took the front bumper off my pre HE in the hope of fitting HE type bumpers which look much classier.
The HE mounting bracket won't fit the impact absorbing rams but I've seen plenty of pictures of early cars with HE bumpers, so obviously it can be done.
Can anyone that has done this or knows how its done please offer me some advice?
Many thanks.

Scotty,

Stretching the memory now.

My HE had no rams, just looooong studs in that position, and I have a glimmer of something that there was once a kit to eliminate the rams, but thet was a very long time ago.

The main brackets bolted to those studs, and sat flat against the body holes that the rams would have been in. That is how the car came, not to confused with "ram removal".

Looking at the parts catalogue, it lists "with" or "without dampers" as a market option for front and rear bumper hardware.

PS, drop into the South Australia section and add a post (say hello) and get included to the role.

Grant's memory is 100% correct, of course. There are tubes that the rams fit in. Remove the rams and into the tube goes a long double ended stud. Onto each end of the stud goes a round washer-type thing that fits over the tube. Do up the assembly so the stud is held in the tube bolted up with a washer each end. this will leave a bit of threaded stud protruding forwards. Onto these the bracket on the HE bumper bar bolts.Tthe same arrangement front and rear bumper.

On this pic you can just see the tubes half off the shot, each side of the car above and outboard of the oil cooler:

On this shot you can see one tube empty and one tube with the stud and washer in place:

and here is the parts diagram for the front bumper
