I have been told that they were standard on later cars and enable the facelift headlights to be adjusted, by accessing some sort of cable adjusters from behind the light itself. Also they are quite handy in any wase on pre facelifts as bulbs can be changed without removing the headlight - which is always a total PIA on pre facelift cars.

I see them on UK Ebay from time to time,

Greg

Yup. I have them on my 95. They came in handy two weekends ago when I changed my facelift headlights for quads.

I don't know him (Roanoke is about 250mi away), but I just purchased some cam cover screws from him on ebay 3 days ago. HA! Coincidence. He was great to deal with. Sent them to me overnight. I talked to him on the phone, and he said he had 5 sorted XJS's and 3 or 4 XJSs for parts. He told me to send him a list of everything I needed and he could probably provide. I am composing the list now. The world is shrinking!

so do the pre-facelifts not have the access panel? i've never looked.

how then do the euros adjust their headlights. or same question for quads with swapped in single lamps?

The pre facelifts adjust from the front with normal screw-threaded adjusters, chrome trim removed (is easiest). Quads ditto.
