Default How can I find out what brand the gearbox is?

The car was sold in Spain, 1990. XJS.

Where can I find out or see what brand the gearbox is?

The car is leaking gearbox oil - and the oil was changed recently, before the sale to the currant owner. Maby they just forgot the sump gasket.

One more question:
The owner wants to cal the car XJS-R.
It looks like a XJS (what I can find out on the net) and is a V12 6,0 liters.

Thankfull for any help!

A 1990 XJS is a 5.3L with the GM TH400 gearbox

If it is an XJR-S then it could be either 5.3 or 6.0 liters. either way unless the gearbox has been changed it will be the GM TH400.

If it's an XJR-S and came from the TWR factory the VIN will start with SAJJS, the second S denothing XJR-S The 8th letter of the VIN S = 6.0 and W = 5.3

Hope this helps.

WOW - Thank's
The VIN number is:
SAJJNAEW3BA150981

What I can understand is that they have taken a standard motor 5,3 and drilled it up to a 6.0. That is - that's what the owner thinks has been done...
The car was sold from Spain to Denmark to a cardealer and from the cardealer to our friend in Sweden.

But still - why is the VIN nr SAJJN...

These VIN numbers kill me... so I'm ever so thankfull for your help!!

The N denotes XJS and the W is 5.3L
SAJJNAEW3BA150981

It may be possible that someone stroked the engine to 6.0L but unless the engine is dismantled it is not possible to determine the capacity.

I would only buy the car based on it being a 5.3 unless it can be proven otherwise.

Well - the car has already been bought.

So - if the gearbox has not been changed it will be: GM TH400.

'Thanks!!

Changes that has been done at TWR:
Lowered
Steering wheel sports model
Back spoiler
Speedometer changed
Drilled to 6,0
(It's not easy to try to speek for somebody else, when I got NO knowledge of Jaguars and he does not read/speak/understand english)

I just got this picture also:

That has the appearance of a 6 litre but the VIN number puts it more around 1988. Engine number would help.

The engine number is right at the back of the engine on top of the bellhouse where the gearbox attaches to the block. It can be a little difficult to find, and will almost certainly need cleaning to read it.
